Re: Hot Battery

Trog,

It appears to me that you are not reading all of the posts before making comments, or only reading what you want to hear.

The high current charger used by waterone1 is one that reduces as the voltage rises, exactly the same as a car/boat alternator.

My comment to you about driving a car was preceded by a quote of your comment about using high current chargers on one of your batteries.

I will now quote you again
now if u really do want to make an old battery dangerous.. its pretty easy to do.. just bung 30 amps into it... leave to to brew for a few hours till well baked.. then come back and closely inspect it..
This comment is totally uncalled for in this type of forum and is not the whole story of what happened.

Fact : An N70Z battery (the most common used in boats) usually has a capacity of around 70-90 Ah. From flat it should be able to take 30amps for 2 to 3 hours without a problem.

Fact : Alternators in modem cars (and most boats) are capabale of producing well in excess of 50 amps when required. If the battery is low in charge the alternator will charge at maximum capacity until the battery reaches ~14 volts. Exactly as the charger waterone used. The alternator in my own car will produce 120 amp if required. I have 2 batteries in my vehicle and I am not the least bit worried about the charge current.

Please, read all of the posts before you make irrelevant or 'out of context' comments, or sarcastic remarks.

We don't 'cosy-cosy' as you suggest on here. If you look around you'll see I have corrected quite a few inaccurate comments on these forums. I have also been wrung out myself (still have some scars to prove it).

I know that human nature is to justify our actions, but in this case I think you should just accept that you made a mistake and move on.

Chris...........

"Fact : An N70Z battery (the most common used in boats) usually has a capacity of around 70-90 Ah. From flat it should be able to take 30amps for 2 to 3 hours without a problem."

we would have to disagree on that one i think chargeing any lead acid battery at 30% or more of its capacity for any length of time is damaging the battery.. doing it to a 70 to 90 ah battery that is of dubious condition is dangerous..

as batteries age dude.. they loose their capacity.. a new 90 ah battery after lots of use could be down as to low as 20 ah true capacity.. put 30 amps (150% of its capacity) into it and after a few hours it explodes.. which is exactly what happened to the battery in question.. as for the clever charger.. well it wasnt that clever was it..

keep on going your way dude and u will probably find out the hard way..

it would seem we learned out "battery" stuff at differenr schools dude..

as for the car thing.. u quite cleary have no idea of how it works.. a fifty amp alternator isnt just for charging your battery.. its for running all the other junk like headlights.. heated screens.. wipers and whatever else a modern car has.. its big enough to do all this and look after your battery.. the average amount that goes into your battery over a long time period is no more than 5 amps or so..

14 volts is not putting 50 amps into 12 volts.. it needs to go a little higher to be doing that..

please go back to school dude and stop talking utter nonsense.. i havnt made any mistake.. and i would dearly love to move on.. however demanding that i admit to something that isnt true is really over the top.. are u a forum moderator by any chance.. if so u are just proving my point..

have u never heard of the impartial "lets aggree to differ guys approach"

if u are a moderator i will move on by the way.. and not make the mistake of coming back as i did before.. just maintain your current biased misinformed stance and u will have your way soon enough..

trog100

Re: Hot Battery

Ok Trog, credentials time!

Computer engineer - 10 years
Electronics Designer - 5 years (includes some of the computer time)
Qualified Mercury marine mechanic - 16 years
I currently work on some very complex equipment in the offshore industry. Equipment that runs on 3,000 volts, 200 amps. I have an ample amount of knowledge and experience to say that you are the one who is out of touch.

Unless you can qualify your experience and knowledge with some facts, then may I suggest that you stay out of subjects you obviously know nothing about! I have looked at your profile and your occupation is 'retired'. What (and when) did you contribute to society?

Got a real name? Mine is Chris.

I don't think your refering to people as 'dude' is very nice and from someone who is 60 years old it's an insult.

May I also suggest that if you wish to continue this you take it to Dockside Chat. Just post "Calling achris". I'll be listening.

Chris..........

Never been one to back away from a fight Neil, especially if I know I'm right and have the knowledge, training and experience to back it up.

Chris.........
