Boat was always dependable on start...then I bogged down when coming out of the hole with skiers, and had a few things swapped out, it fixed the bog but...

Fix was a new distributor, solenoid, plug wires, spark plugs, points etc. about 20 hours ago. Then I had the carb rebuilt over the past 10 hours ago. Problem occurs both pre and post carb rebuild. New battery makes no difference either (it is not deep cycle but an 880A marine starter).

Cold starts, the engine fires immediate 90% of the time with no additional throttle from me, I may give it one pump, but put it back to stratight up neutral and it fires, choke opens fine...then I run it out on the lake making a few stops to change skiers etc. When trying to restart (open choke, hot engine) I can tell after a few turns if its going to turn over, almost like I can hear another load kick in (turn slows) - in this case I have to hold the throttle down just about all the way and it takes a good 7-10 seconds of turning to start. I've often though 'am I holding the key over too far too long, is the engine starved for air, fuel, what gives?' Bottom line it always requires a good bit of throttle after a warm up.

But wait theres more, I can put the boat back in the slip after an hour of stop starts on the lake, let it sit just a minute or two and it fires right up, I'll come back to the boat several times over the next hour, throttle completely neutral, and it starts immediate every time.

Have tried multiple times to get it hot, set throttle to 700 rpm then tweak carb adjustments but nothing seems do make a difference (including vacuum that holds at 17). I could have those backed out 2 full turns or a 1/2 turn and doesnt seem to make a difference and of course have no science to prove this is my real issue anyway.

I can always get it started, would just like the quick start in all conditions back like the old days.

Thoughts?

Welcome to iboats.
I would check the timing.

You said you changed the points, did your adjust the dwell with a dwell meter?

Re: Hot start trouble

does it have a good cranking speed if it does it sound like you should check your float level in the carb

Re: Hot start trouble

Ok,....on the carb, if the float is set proper, could I have a hole in it that woudl cause the issue? The float is new.

The points and timing....can have it checked, have never tried that one myself but did notice the plugs they changed out were not gapped proper....

Thanks

Re: Hot start trouble

if there was a hole in the float you would probable always have a problem.with a carb the fuel evaporates off a little when the engine hot soaks so i would run it good and shut it down let sit a bit then pull the top off of the carb and check the float level if there is not enough fuel in the bowl then bend the float arm a little and run the boat again to verify the repair

Re: Hot start trouble

It sounds like the float level could be too high. and when the engine is hot it ends up flooding itself. I would try lowering your float level alittle and see if it improves.

Re: Hot start trouble

Welcome to the forum.

Hard to start when the engine is hot you say?

most probable:

1. carb flooding-float problem or leaky gasket
2. ignition timing wrong (spark advance, point gap, or cap)Condenser ?
3. if engine turns over slower when hot, could be battery connection problem

Next time it gives you trouble starting, I would remove the flame arrestor and look into the carb venturi to see if there is gas coming out of the main discharge nozzle or if the intake is flooded with gas. If it is you have a carb problem.

If you don't see a bunch of gas in the intake, put the flame arrestor back on and remove the coil wire to see if the absence of spark makes a difference on the sound and speed the engine makes while trying to start. This may help you to rule out a timing issue.

Check the battery connections, you said when hot turns over slower.

Good luck and hope you find the problem.

check your timing again sounds like it's to far advanced

Re: Hot start trouble

After many attempts to tweak here & there, I decided to pull the carb and rebuild (for a second time) at the end of the 2009 boating season. Put it back on just before the winterization and all seemed good...but that was late fall. Happy to report just spent a weekend of ski/tube/goof-off, and the boat fires up perfect on "hot starts", cold etc. Given I had a little extra gas smell, my guess is somthing wasn't right with the first rebuild and the carb was flooding. Note the float had no hole in it, or gas in it when I pulled it. I replaced it with the new float anyway... Could have been a number of things wrong in the first rebuild including the float getting stuck somehow etc. Who knows. It runs great, hope it lasts and thanks for all the comments.

Re: Hot start trouble

If you haven't found problem yet, Check your coil. I had the same issue a while back with a Volvo 260. While it was not a points system, I believe the same theory applies.

I purchased a new Accel coil (pretty yellow one) When cold, starts up great. Runs forever, BUT, when you stop and try to start hot, no go. Put the original coil back on, worked great from that point on. (no-pun intended) Also, The new, disfunctional coil, would get "Super Hot". Regular coil gets hot, but this one would get hotter than hot. Must have been a bad one.
Hope this helps

Re: Hot start trouble

Two things done to finally fix the problem, 1. I had the choke pulled too tight 2. Rebuilt Carb again. No more problems.
