Boat was always dependable on start...then I bogged down when coming out of the hole with skiers, and had a few things swapped out, it fixed the bog but...
Fix was a new distributor, solenoid, plug wires, spark plugs, points etc. about 20 hours ago. Then I had the carb rebuilt over the past 10 hours ago. Problem occurs both pre and post carb rebuild. New battery makes no difference either (it is not deep cycle but an 880A marine starter).
Cold starts, the engine fires immediate 90% of the time with no additional throttle from me, I may give it one pump, but put it back to stratight up neutral and it fires, choke opens fine...then I run it out on the lake making a few stops to change skiers etc. When trying to restart (open choke, hot engine) I can tell after a few turns if its going to turn over, almost like I can hear another load kick in (turn slows) - in this case I have to hold the throttle down just about all the way and it takes a good 7-10 seconds of turning to start. I've often though 'am I holding the key over too far too long, is the engine starved for air, fuel, what gives?' Bottom line it always requires a good bit of throttle after a warm up.
But wait theres more, I can put the boat back in the slip after an hour of stop starts on the lake, let it sit just a minute or two and it fires right up, I'll come back to the boat several times over the next hour, throttle completely neutral, and it starts immediate every time.
Have tried multiple times to get it hot, set throttle to 700 rpm then tweak carb adjustments but nothing seems do make a difference (including vacuum that holds at 17). I could have those backed out 2 full turns or a 1/2 turn and doesnt seem to make a difference and of course have no science to prove this is my real issue anyway.
I can always get it started, would just like the quick start in all conditions back like the old days.
Thoughts?
