1. Rural cats should be inside cats.

2. You should have called the law about the cruelty to any animal, your cat included.

3. It would be unwise to retaliate in any way.

Tastes a little like baby giraffe, if you've ever had that. Though, they're not as common just out there running around.

Well, close. Tastes like miniature giraffe, which is as small as a baby giraffe but in point of fact is full grown, but a little gamier unless you soak it in buttermilk.

Re: How angry would you be?

I understand setting live traps, but not checking the trap for 5 days would be cruel to even the things they were most likely trying to catch. Unless they were trying to catch your cat. Problem with cats are, they go where ever they want. Some people don't like cats crapping in their grass or bushes all of the time. I understand that completely. Why should I clean up your cats sh**. I shouldn't have to. But, if you're setting live traps, you should be checking them daily.

My wife was picking blackberries in our back yard and the neighbor's cat, which of course they denied was theirs, bit her ankle as it walked by. It got infected, even after she cleaned it. Dr. Bills, a week on the couch with her leg elevated, and a bit of pain I'm sure. We turned the hose on the cat every time it comes into our yard, which is a lot less now. So you never know really know the issues your cat can cause someone just because you call it "an outside cat" and let it roam.

So....it's both of your faults :p

Re: How angry would you be?

Our next door neighbors cat went missing and never returned. It was a survivor and had gone for up to 2 weeks and returned in the past. This past weekend in my yard was a mutilated, large rabbit and I'm thinking whatever got the rabbit also got the cat. These people are what I would call irresponsible pet owners for various reasons.

Re: How angry would you be?

I like those mini dogs with the cornbread coating ... Wonder if it would work for mini giraffes?

Hey Rob, I appreciate how you feel. I don't like the I humane fact the trap wasn't checked. Maybe he just forgot about it, but no excuse. I also feel for "stay" cats in my yard. I have a tabby and a black and white coming into my yard on a regular basis. Given the chance, they will be dispatched quickly and humanely, but I am tired of the things they leave behind.

They don't have miniature giraffes in Pennsylvany, Art. Sheesh.

#1 How do you know the cat was in the cage for 5+ days?? You're only assuming it was in there the entire time it was missing.

#2 I'd have the local humane society pay your neighbor a visit. Or, usually a county sheriff is happy to have a chat and tune them up!

I used to trap those when I was a kid. They brought in good money then. Once I caught a grouse in a trap. Used it as bait by digging a hole and burying it with it's tail feathers sticking out. Yep, caught a Fisher. That thing "leveled" everything that it could reach within 360?. Even a small poplar tree..... They're mean, mean, mean......

Re: How angry would you be?

Talking to my neighbour is "HIGH" on the priority list.
We found the trap on the ground with bailing twine to the handle connected to a tree while going through a pulley, for what reason?
we suspect the kids set it, as the way it was set makes no sense to a person over 12 years of age????

Now remember these are farm cats and they have a job and thats killing mice/rodents.
We and our neighbours do not use poison or traps (unsafe and not practical)

Re: How angry would you be?

Definitely talk to your neighbour Rob...thats the best place to start. He might have made a mistake or had to travel, been sick or?....who knows? Don't' assume that he necessarily planned it that way and it usually turns positive in resolution.;)
As for the outdoor/indoor cat thing. Well, we have a cat and he goes outside but usually only in 1hr-ish increments. We wouldn't leave him out too much longer than that and he doesn't seem to wander too far anyways luckily. He is neutered and he is fairly tame and friendly...but he is cat. I would have to say he is an 80% indoor cat...and what is comical about him...is that he doesn't seem to like to 'do his business' outside LOL. He waits until we let him in then runs upstairs to his litter box...go figure?:D
Now, if you are on an acreage and in Coyote (and cougar) country.....don't get too attached to an outdoor pet that isn't constantly supervised, because the clock is probably just tickin' on this in terms of him not coming home at some point.
Good luck tho' either way tho'!!

The amount of damage some small mammals can cause is amazing. Even a racoon is a killing machine if cornered.
We are literally on the edge of civilization at the house and so I'm thinking coyote but can't really come up with another explanation. I've seen two sets of large animal bones by the pond next door this summer also now that I think about it. We've got some kind of predator.

Re: How angry would you be?

It's YOUR cat & it should stay on YOUR property - What happens, happens. Maybe the neighbors were tired of cat crap in the flower beds?

I don't agree with leaving it there for 5 days though.

Re: How angry would you be?

O.K., O.K. I'll comment... It was like this thread title was haunting me or something... Yeah I'd be mad. If you set a trap you need to check it. The neighbor is a jerk and has never been a hunter. Those of you who are saying to keep your cat on your property don't own cats or you have them leashed, on shock collars or some other weird thing. Unless the cat is one of those truly nasty cats, it's just passing through the neighbors unless the neighbor is feeding it.

If it was one of those truly nasty cats, this post would read... "Neighbord trapped my cat and killed it. What do you think I should offer him as a reward."

O.K. I'm over it now... LOL...

It could be just that, Robby, kids messin' around trying to catch anything they can. I remember as kids making live traps. The door was held open by a stick which had a string connected to it. When a bird, or whatever, would walk in the trap we pulled the string and we had our prey. We just released whatever we caught. Maybe they had forgotten about it....

Farm cats do belong outdoors, just for that reason, to kill mice. My grandparents had farm cats way back when. They weren't allowed in the house. They came around during feeding time, otherwise, they were usually sleeping in the barn or shed. They're country cats, not city cats.......

Around here everyone has dogs. Sometimes they wonder to the neighbors. All we do is get on the phone and ask if they're missing so and so. No biggy. We've all made the call. Heck, just recently I saw a white head amongst the white seed of the tops of canadian thistle in the brush(I have 20 acres), and it was moving. What the heck! Turned out to be one of my neighbors fancy chickens that was missing for a few days. Made the call, they got their chicken and their young daughter was very happy.

Yep, there's something about being neighborly. Unfortunately, that's dying quickly........

I agree that farm cats belong outdoors but what farmers and farm kids understand better than anyone is the cycle of life. In other words some of the farm cats die and some don't (and many have 6 or 7 toes per paw). On a farm, I'd have lots of cats but I would expect many will die terrible deaths and some just will quit coming home which is different than this situation it seems.
