How do I "make" a replacement compartment lid?

HI guys. I have a compartment lid that needs replacing. It originally had a seat and cushion over it, but the seat and plywood that it was attached to is rotten. The compartment holds rods (long and skinny lid). My plan is to cut the new lid out of (marine-grade plywood?), and cover with carpet.

My question is this: What material should I use to make the new lid? The other lids are aluminum. That's not an option for me. Can I use a marine-grade plywood and coat with something before I cover with carpet?

Any guidance here would be much appreciated. Kind regards, ac.

Unless I already had some scrap, I probably wouldn't make a lid out of marine grade plywood. A properly sealed piece of regular exterior or pt plywood should be fine. If you post some pics you'll probably get some good ideas from the guys here.

to rebuild our jumpseats in our 85 starcraft -we used redguard to seal the plywood - it's a product used to seal cement prior to tiling (found at the hd).

yup exterior ply is just fine......

marine grade is just dryer and has fewer voids between the ply but anything "marine" has a super price tag on it.

I've heard it called the "marine tax".

I rebuilt the rotted-out seat bottoms on my 1997 Bayliner in 2000 with home Depot pressure-treated plywood painted with 2 coats of Min-wax "Spar Varnish". They still looked brand new when I sold the boat last fall.

It is in fact better wood. Not just a marine tax. I used marine ply for my transom and that wood was great!! It was way better than anything that you can get at lowes or HD. There is nice lumber then there is like PT lumber. The pressure treated is the worst to use in marine application then there is ply that has more ply's. As long as you dont use pressure treated ply. In my opinion that is the worst wood you can use unless you are building a deck or something. Pressure treated and boats just dont match up!

You can get furniture grade plywood that usually has about 8 plys and then seal it up with polyurethane or some other oil based finish that will soak into it and seal it up.

The long skinny rods are for propping the lid up so you don't have to hold it. If they are bad, take them off and bring them to an automotive store and find replacements, but be careful of the application. You don't want a ram that is designed to hold up a minivan door, it'll be too strong. If you have a place that sells replacement parts for truck toppers, you'll have better luck.

Nah I wasn't just referring to marine plywood which I will also use. Put the word "marine" in front of anything and expect to pay a premium for it.:D
