Willyclay, that sounds pretty solid to me. I'd change the PWC trailer to a garden cart or something a little better suited to being manhandled if it was me though.

Re: How Do I Remove Outboard Off The Beach

ive moved my 120 hp on my own up the steps into my shed i just took off the lower unit as the mid section has a flat base then put it on a tow dolly and strapped it then pulled it backwards up the steps. a couple of old tee shirts between the cowling and the dolly stopped any scatches. as for getting it off the beach the a piece of wood to use as a skid to get it near the water a plastic bag to keep it dry and a small blow up boat that you can deflate on the beach roll the motor into the middle then pump it back up while the tide is out then a long rope and wait till the water gets high enoght to float the boat then tow it out. take a battery saw and cut the boat why waste a good cable as the controller is proberly worth a few bucks especially if you plan to reuse the motor.

Satso, late to the game but a small Bobcat with a track would be pretty handy if you could get it to the beach.

Hope you had a brain storm, or a lot of help.

Re: How Do I Remove Outboard Off The Beach

Thanks to all of you! I had the opportunity to read many of these posts on my smart phone before the motor was moved. I wish I could reply to each of you. I gave much thought about what was posted. Some of it just couldn't be done....all had to be done by hand. I was under a time frame due to the tide.

My BIL and I removed all the electronic gauges, monitor panel, and freeded up the engine. We were able to softly lower it on a blanket in the soft sand. We then called a friend with a hand truck. We strapped the whole thing to the truck. At this time there was four of us. We headed down the beach with the engine in tow. We got about 10 yards and one of us gave out. Heat exhaustion. Four guys in their fifties.....go figure. I called in 2 other friends much younger. We found a short-cut over the dunes that didn't interfere in the seagrass. This eliminated the boardwalk with the steps. Now we have only about 100 yards to go.

Taking a break thinking we have this made, here comes a beachwalker. He stated he had first claims on the vessel. He called the Sherriff. 2 FWC (DNR) guys show up, a Deputy, and an EPA guy. After 2 hours of negotiating with them we discovered we had no right to the engine for another 13 days. The origional Deputy didn't follow proper protocol in this matter. We were forced to put the motor in the boat. The FWC and EPA guys gave us the go. We made an agreement to hold the engine for the proper time period in hopes to find the owner, it was probably stole. The Deputy said no. As it stands now? The boat with motor is being washed out to sea.

Everybody loses out on this one. Mother Nature now had more trash in her ocean. We are going to do all we can to get these laws changed. We could have saved the engine and all the other good removable parts. Now she is worthless to everybody and anybody.

Thanks again for all the imput.

That's a great idea, 82rude!

Yes it is, Robert. We just took a walk to the beach to see what happened to the boat and motor. The boat is now broken up and the motor is in the surf being ruined.

I would have volunteered my time getting this engine off the boat along with the hydraulics, the half full fuel tank, the batteries, and any other enviromental hazzards. I don't want that stuff on the beach or in the ocean. Heck, I would take a sawzall and cut her up and carry her away in several wheelbarrows full.

I took some photos, I will post soon.I am insenced and frustrated that they let all this go to waste and destroy our enviroment.

Let's not get too political, please!

That was a 2012 Yamaha?...what size motor?...there'll still be some good sell-able parts on it, like the foot, etc...

Re: How Do I Remove Outboard Off The Beach

That's too bad but I am not surprised (my comment from my previous post is below). I have spent most of my free/vacation time on empty beaches and have been around many beached vessels; seen some rescued and more blown apart by the surf.

The biggest waste comes in situations like this where the law requires you to stand by and watch it happen. This is because the laws are designed to deal with boating 100 years ago: either a ship washed up and the laws mattered and timing didn't, or a skiff with no motor washed up and time was not that important, you just dragged it up to the tide line and then dealt with it. I have the 1849 Code of Virginia right here and it's not very different from today's statute on "estrays or vessels found adrift."

Then they add all the environmental regulations, coupled with the inconsistency of Federal maritime law, state property law, and local ordinances. And God help you if the beach is also Federal land.

I'm not making this up. The US District Court recently issued a 31 page opinion regarding a person who picked up a piece of rope from a boat washed up on Chincoteague (federal wildlife refuge). Was it abandoned? Who abandoned it? To whom was it abandoned? Or was it still owned by X? or now Y? on and on. Same judge who worked on some of the Titanic cases, I believe.

After a 36' boat washed up on our island, I said something to the Coasties about salvage. They said, start with the fuel and better do it right. I said no thanks.
A 24' with twin mercs about 200hp each sat in the surf line for a couple months until a big storm tore it down. Took less than a week for a 42' wooden sailboat to be spread over 4 miles (that one got stripped w/ owner's permission, but in 1 tide cycle on a deserted island, no bridge.)

Meanwhile some jerk found a small boat that had floated off and instead of doing the right thing and telling the owner (there was one) he decided to go all law-of-salvage over it. Fine, said the authorities. he had to pay all kinds of money, run all kinds of ads, serve all kinds of notices, and then give it back to the owner.

In your case, the first sheriff was wrong, and I bet if you drilled down on it, the other LEO's and the guy claiming ownership weren't 100% right. Since you asked, they had to say, "put it back." I'd like to think that if you didn't, but still made the motor available down the line to whoever has the best claim, you wouldn't be in trouble. Might even get reimbursed for your plywood.

Until the laws are updated and coordinated, the absurd will be the results of following the law. But who is going to take on the project to revise the laws, and what legislator is going to care?

Sorry you didn't get away with it. I was rooting for you. You earned it, I don't care what they say.

..."And after you get to the top step, you get to hand it over to the Federal marshalls assigned to seize and sell the drug runner's assets. He will be most grateful. (Do not attempt to use the "law of salvage" or worse, listen to the advice about what it says and how it applies)...."

true, and I can live with it, which is why I am not spending my time trying to change the laws of salvage. Would rather stop the commercial menhaden slaughter.

I was going to ask if you actually could take it legally but after reading the posts I see that the question has been answered.
