Re: How do you drain your engine oil?

I did the thru the dipstick method this year. When I got done, I removed the drain plug. It didn't even drip. I was amazed. When I took off the oil filter, it did drip, about a cup of oil spilled into the bilge. What about pouring some kind of cleaner in the crankcase to drain any leftover nasties? I haven't tried it, but thought about it. Someone told me once to pour in some kerosene to wash out the interior of the motor and oil pan.

That sounds scary. You would have to make sure you got every drop of kerosene out of your engine, otherwise it would thin your oil - not good.

Jeff

Cold or hot, the best method is to drain your oil immediately after running it. Doesn't have to be run for long; 30 seconds is probably good enough. The point is you want "the nasties" mixed in not settled out. The turbulence of the flow kicks that stuff up and allows the oil to carry it out for you. If it sits, it may settle in little spots that don't drain well.

Also, the bag method rocks!! Just use two, like a doublehulled tanker . . . I stick them in my drain pan when I do the car or the boat. Doesn't matter if you are sucking it out or you have the drain system.
