Re: how does a boat gain your trust?

I have owned the same boat since 1993. It's really old- a 1972- so I trust it.

I trust the motor too, cuz I know it will start at 17degrees F. And when it won't start, I know what to do because all it means is that the choke stuck. And I know I can pull-start the engine with a dead battery.

I trust the boat because I know that it will survive a 4' wake from a big cruiser piloted by an idiot on Lake Champlain, and I know it won't even sink when the underhull fills with water when its dutiful owner forgets one drain plug :-O

Familiarity develops trust.

All that and remembering to put the plug in !!!!!

Jees no one hear has never done that:rolleyes:

Time and use of your boat will give you trust in it. You can count on some problems there always are. Just be prepared and start out where you feel comfortable and work from there. We have all been there.

For me it is redundant systems. Kickers, paddles, radios, buddies and having people knowing where I am helps me trust my boat....but I'm Irish and Murphy's Laws keeping from a 100% trust in anything.

My boat and I went to a trust promotion class where we fall backwards and the other catches you.. my boat crushed the instructor... but didn't get a single scratch from the fall! Now that's trust! ;)

I reality, When they say you have to earn trust.. they are thinking about boats.. trust is expensive and I'm on a budget.

I trust my boat is a 1990 mechanical object that rusts, corrodes, wear out and was built at the lowest cost possible. In knowing all of that, I trust I am insured and have enough mechanical skill to fix what goes wrong and I'll never leave the sight of shore..

I began trusting my boat just after I finished all the work I did. :D Since I did all the work I trust myself enough to know I did it right. Now trusting the O/B is another matter, I trust her but being that I bought it used it took a good season of running and learning what the touchy thing likes and dislikes. As stated by everyone else "preventative maintenance" is the only thing that keeps me trusting my O/B; along with a good tool bag! :D

LOL , it keeps the water on the OUTSIDE , and handles in a predictable manner .

I had a fiberglass boat once , that always went in circles .
You had to row for your life with 1 hand , and , bail with the other ...:D
