Seriously, when I drive back home and park, my Camry or Yukon, he knows when to walk out to me??? Does he just know the sound of my vehicles? Everyday, he just meets me at mailbox if he was outside when I left, and greets me/us!!! Weird!!! But cool :)

Cats have very acute hearing. They can practically "see" with their ears. As an example, the cat I have can tell the difference between the garbage truck and UPS truck before I hear either. She runs and hides from the UPS.

Along with their exceptional hearing, I think it's an internal clock thing, watch for it the next daylight savings time change, usually takes our cat a couple of days to re-adjust each time.

Our older dog knows the sound of our vehicles car alarm being set and goes to the front door to wait with that dust-mop of a tail wagging away, and if I try to set the alarm from in the house with the mrs present, he gives a look at the door then back at us as if to say WTH's up with that{lol}

I have often wondered about that, our cat, when she's outside, will appear out of no where when we are driving toward the house. She will cross our path and stop, scratch her ear and then procede to the garage. Any other car she will hide until it has passed. Amazing topic.

Both cats and dogs can identify sounds that are specific to your vehicle. While they may also show interest in similar vehicles, they often know their owner's specific vehicle by some very subtle sound that it makes, which is different than any other car.

With dogs, the sense that amazes me the most, is their ability to detect scents. I once watched a "bomb dog" identify a very small amount of gunpowder, which was put into a short piece of pipe that had end caps. The caps were screwed down tightly and, as far as I know, there was no residue at all on the outside. The handlers placed the "bomb" under a seat in the cabin of a Gulfstream business jet, which we were letting the bomb squad use for training. When brought aboard the aircraft, the dog sniffed each seat casually, until he got to the one with the pipe. He immediately recognised it, sat down, and looked up at his handler. No barking, no apparent excitement - he just sat, indicating that he had found what he was supposed to find.

Smart critters, those dogs and cats!

more proof of that comment..
ziggy my best cat that died got totally blind at about 5 years old. he could still catch a bird and eat it. after he was blind. squirrels and rabbits too. i'd watch him track (with head movement) a bird that was flying too. just like he could see it. but he was blind. his ears were like they were on swivels all the time. they were always moving, listening. they also can learn. one of the more amazing things ziggy would do to catch a squirrel was to stalk the neighbors bird feeder. the squirrels would go up the neighbors tree, across the garage roof, jump to the cloths line and then to the bird feeder. ziggy would hide in the ferns till his squirrel was at the feeder. then come out of hiding. the squirrel would then back track the way he got to the bird feeder. after scareing the bird. ziggy would go to the base of the tree and wait for his dinner to come down the tree. then the chase was on..
i also believe they can sense air pressure difference with their whiskers. think i read somewhere that whiskers are part of the seeing ability. if ya touch a cats whiskers, likely it'll blink.
my cats are like everyone elses. they know when me or the gf have come home. they certainly know us from strangers. anyone approaches my home and the cats are all over it. they don't bark like a dog, but they certainly react to the presence of someone else, even though they can't be seen by me... cat behavior is most interesting to be sure..

they have an internal clock. i work at home most of the time. When it is time for Sylvia to come home. Shadow is on the back of the couch watching for her. Nights when she is late, ( groceries or a movie) he will sit there for a while, then come to me, and look like "where is she".

Vehicles have a "voice" that is as distinct as your voice. Most dogs and cats can recognise that voice from a long distance.

Dogs and cats are also more sensitive to time of day than we are.

They can put these things together to be at the door or gate before we get there.

What I can't theorize, though, is how they know whether we are going for a walk, a ride in the country, hunting or fishing or the Vet. Our Irish Setter, Sport, knew each with uncanny accuracy.

This is true - they use them to sense the vibrations (air movement) that occurs when prey is moving. I have also seen a blind cat use them to follow familiar routes, by dragging them along walls, etc.

Re: How does my cat know I'm coming home????

I have a 17 year old cat that sleeps like a person, when it is cold. If the house gets cool, she pushes her nose under the covers on the bed, gets completely under them and then turns around. After that, she moves back towards the edge of the covers, until her head is sticking out.

I had three of them, all of whom used to sleep in my workshop, but when the others passed, I let her come into the house. She is now the "Queen Bee" of the joint and certainly can not be expected to live like a mere cat! I do need to send her over to the thread on substance abuse, however, because she is definately a catnip junkie. Where's Nancy Reagan when you need her? I need to learn how to say "just say no" in "cat!"

I have three, but one of them thinks he's a dog. When we let the labs in for the night, they know when the wife says bedroom, they shoot down the hallway, well, this cat usually beats them to the bedroom. The other two just stay on the couch and look at the stupid circus animals listening to the human. LOL

Cody runs like he's a cross between a dog and a rabbit!!!! He cracks us up!

When I want to find mine I just tap the electric can opener.:D

Ever notice how weird they act when you catch them out where they're not supposed to be? I ran up on the family cat when I was hunting as a kid about a half-mile from the house, I walked up to it to carry it home and it nearly tore my head off!
