How does this come apart ?

Please help ! Thanks to all

You have to take the steering wheel off and undo the large nut - kind of like the one on the back side in the 3rd pic.. It has to come off anyway if you want to put new wood around the shaft.

Ohh so i dont take the drum off then that nut? i should take off the steering wheel to get to the other side? how does the steering wheel come off ? can i put on different kind of steering if i take the hub off?
sorry i am new to boat steering i have always had a tiller.:)

Undo the rusty nut and take the drum off, it's probably on a taper with a key.

If you take the rusty nut and drum off, the shaft is still going through the wood dash. It all has to come apart.

The center of the steering wheel probably pries off to get to the big nut and key behind the wheel.

If you want to upgrade the steering, stop now and don't worry about getting it all apart. As long as the existing dash can be used for a pattern, you won't need it or the old steering.
