FlyRod -

Sure the plumbers up by you make lotsa money - just look at all the "quaint" & "historic" buildings there are...with the "Quaint" and "Historic" plumbing! All put in when "code" was something only the Vatican used! :D

(My mother's side of the family is from Fall River - I know about "quaint" & "historic" )

Hate to say it but I was a drop out until 16 years ago. I had goals in life but wasn't on track to achieve them :)
I went back to school and got my grade 12 then went to trade school/college. I never really stopped since then... I have my carpenter’s papers, welding C&B tickets, water distribution class 1, 2&3 certifications. I was lucky enough to have the chance to 'get it together' and I made the most of it.

Most listen to the one with the loudest voice, and will dismiss any notion that disagrees with that loud voice.

Re: How educated are you?

I should be receiving my Doctorats degree in "HOW NOT TO DO THINGS" any day now. :D :D

When it came time for me to go on with my education, I wanted to go to a trade school, (Autobody). My dad insisted that I go to a business colledge. I was so interested in it that My grades suffered tremendously so I got drafted in 1968. When I got out of the Army I became an Autobodyman on my own and learned it on my own. I was allways the highest paid lineman in every shop I worked at.

I told ya Dad what I wanted to do but you wouldnt listen even if I would be healthier today if I would have listened.

Hey you were fast compared to me! I took one class at a time (when time permitted) from 18 years old to 28 to get my associates!
Silly things like Job, kids, hunting and fishing kept getting in the way! :D

Is this thread indicative of earning power? I make $29.15 hourly plus great bennies. No BS degree, but Tech training as well as skill certs. Strain, accel, sound technologies background as well as me stuff. can please my woman better than most, shoot straight, catch a fish when I need to, create a great long short story for my kids, kill a deer or a threat as defined at the circumstance, make a motor run, stuff great Kolbas sausage, plumb the house or roof a shak, plunge a terlet, shovel dirt, post on Iboats, make my own ammo, boil water, actually groom myself to standards acceptable by my woman (occasionally), dress to the same standards of SWMBO, speak shop talk now and then and speak eloquence and softly when correct to do so, ........ahhhh enough......figure I's like most here.........

Re: How educated are you?

College was the biggest waste of time in my life. I got out of the Coast Guard after 7 years with a big fat GI bill. I was already a paramedic and I wanted to go on to med school. Yeah right, it took me about 2 semesters to ask myself, "What the H*** am I doing!" 25 years old with 8 to 10 years of school ahead of me. But, I had the money so I got a degree in geology that I haven't used to this day, except to identify rocks for people. Looking back, I wish I'd have gone to pilot school or something. Fly Rod is right on when he says trade school is the way to go. A much smaller education commitment, but a near comparable payoff. I make as much or more as a flight paramedic as I would working for the USGS or the like. A 4 year degree doesn't mean a whole lot nowadays. At the very least you need a masters and even that just gets you an entry level job. I know it's not true for everyone, just mostly what I see.

Eye no Y!!

its Becuz of the numbur of peeple on this fourum that STILL kant rite good even tho thay gots a diplomah frum kollej.

I have a Bachelors degree in Marketing. Never used it. I do not, however, feel that college was a waste of time. Learned a lot about a host of subjects, learned how to write resumes, interview, handle finances, make friends, shotgun a beer, prevent a bogart, and keep myself from meeting an early death while doing insanely stupid things on a regular basis. Quite worthwhile, in my opinion. Plus I firmly believe that a 4 year degree in ANYTHING helps increase exponentially the odds of a young person landing a good paying job early in life.

It's a good foundation, and a total blast if you do it right. And it was the best 4 year vacation of my life, bar none.

Re: How educated are you?

I can tell ya why the 4 year degree deal wuz popular for us boomer's. Cause it was fashionable at the time. I had an Uncle in the educator profession. He claimed if'in ya didn't have a college education, ya wernt chit. And so forth. That is why the high schools, etc drooped the focus on trades, 'cause were all gonna be business majors, managers, and lib arts stooges.

Nowadays the schools are reacting....per the requests from the building trades professions and the like........to retool their curriculum to provide educational skill sets for those needed trades.

Can't outsource a Carpenter, Electrician, nor a Pipefitter.

But is now proven that ya can "outsource" a white collar engineer, and is now trending to "outsource" the white collar financial as well as admin jobs as well.

This outsource deal has pissed me off for years when only the manufacturing sector was moving. The white collar folks claimed just deserves. Now that the white collar folks jobs are being outsourced....screams of bloody protest..

serves ya right for ignoring the trend when it became relevant to affecting American Families..

Harsh..but real.........ya don't like it...become a Trial Lawer...lotsa money their and not regulated yet, nor outsourced

Re: How educated are you?

Could do with a multiple selection there... Left school with very good grades-wanted to start training as a vet but some real duff career advice from school messed that up. Done electronics/physics at college, 3 years trade school and part of a fabrication/design apprenticeship at Rover cars, a year in-work motorcycle mechanics (and a few years doing it for cash-in-hand!) and done plenty of 'other'...

By the time I reached 27 I realised it's no fun doing something you like doing for a hobby as a job... so I prefer driving semi's. Can't do that at home! :D

I put jr. high, as I was kicked out of highschool, but I did get a CHSPE(California high school proficiency exam) diploma equivalent. I've also had a few years of college but no degree.

Re: How educated are you?

i still believe a college degree is the right ticket. sure, the trades are a good choice and required... our country wouldn't survive without them. but if you want to give yourself a better chance at earning more money and avoiding 'labor', college is a necessity. i'm thankful every day that i made that decision.

Re: How educated are you?

I have a Bachelors degree in Global Business and an MBA. I can’t do my job without my education, and my degrees have served me well. I do acknowledge that college is not for everyone. One of my good friends is a carpenter, and I have always had a lot of respect for skilled trade’s men. The most important thing is being a well trained worker. There are too many idiots out there pretending to know what they are doing when they are actually doing shoddy work. I don’t care if my kids go to college, trade school, or develop an apprentice relationship, but I don’t want them entering the workforce in their chosen profession without proper training. You just can’t “wing it” over the life of a career without developing some type of expertise.
