Re: How educated are you?

I have no degrees and I can't explain things well but I sure have enough people asking for my advice and help with repairs!

I agree with Aquaski, also.

I have two degrees. 1. AS in Automotive and Heavy Equipment Repair. 2. BS in Automotive Technology. Both of these degrees required "real world" apprenticeships. A unique program, to this day.

I am currently in the field that my degrees addressed. They have been very valuable.

I have found the oportunities for that education taught me many things.

1. Self sufficiency. I was mostly self sufficient throughout school.

2. Business etiquette.

3. Communication skills.

Could I have gotten to where I am without them? Probably-yes. The road would have been longer though.

As Aquaski eluded to, our shifting economy places more emphasis on hands-on skills. That is not a bad thing. It is needed.

I do find, now, that my experiene is my #1 asset.

Re: How educated are you?

This is what I find strange.
I have been in business for 30yrs. Have had some tight moments, but all up been sucessful and always looked forward to working.
Have associated mainly with people in Business, and i can only think of 1 (Warwick) who was University educated.
One even use to print his signature cause he couldn't write, yet Lester probably wraps up for around $10-12 big ones these days.
All were sucessful in every way, and none were what i will call 'political' in the way they delt with people. All were generous in assisting not only each other, but also the community by way of quiet donations.
It just dosn't fit with what our kids are taught in Society.
Be a good student, get good grades, go to University, get a good job, get made redundant a few times, work towards retirement, then drop dead.
I don't even want to retire, I enjoy doing what i do so much. Neither do my friends.
Like day and night isn't it.
Cheers
Phillip

I strongly encourage everyone I know to pursue a college education. The more white collar executives those institutions produce, the more carpentry work I get. :)

Very good carpenters easily get what electricians and plumbers do, which incidentally, is as good or better than the white collar jobs pay.

Re: How educated are you?

Some people say that if you have parents who only make minimum wage....the children of the said parents, would not amount to much more.
I believe that is true to a point, but not 100% accurate.
My parents never made much money, as far as I knew.

As of this moment, I am in the process of opening up my own business. It should have been open by now, but it is not because of foolish ways I have spent my money. But all is not lost yet, I have a great plan on how to start my own business in the very near future.
As well, within the next year, I will become management at the university I work at. How? Because I meet the right people, got backed by my employer and some luck too.

My education is only 2 credits in high school, but I have attended cooking school, First Aid(for 8 years now), 2 years of Law school, Firefighters Training school and lots of business classes.

I agree that college and university is the right way to go, depending on what you want to do.
I see people in the unversity that have been there for over 10 years and have no intention on using their knowledge for a career.
They are "Career Students".....weird eh?!

I was held back in school.............so I wouldn't pass my father and uncle.........(been waiting a long time to use that line)......spent 7 years getting a 4 year degree and worked for 25 years in that field (accounting) and then became self unemployed in a totally different field.

I had to lie a little since there was not a category for some college. Went four years but did not graduate as I changed majors then ran out of money and went to work.
