How hard is a carb rebuild?

Re: How hard is a carb rebuild?

Remove the top and pump the plunger by hand and make your best guess as to whether the bore is worn or the balls are not working as they should.

I did this. The new pump works really hard by hand in the housing (meaning it makes a really tight seal). I was actually concerned it might be too hard which is why I reverted to the old pump as I said in my last post. After what you just said, I'm definitely going to switch back to the new pump. When there was gas in the bowl still and I was working the new pump by hand, it definitely shot out a bunch of fuel from the ventury, so it doesn't seem the housing is shot.

It really seems like there is just this delay when I gun the gas. After that split second, it dumps the gas in quick and works just fine (if it hasn't stalled). I followed all the instructions on adjusting the linkages, etc. to the 't' & it doesn't seem like there is sufficient play in the pump linkage to cause any problems there.

Either way when you barely move the throttle it must pump fuel or there will be a bog.

Adjust if you can --- bend if you must !

I think I have a dirty carb too.. How long would it take the marina to fix it? 2 hours, 4, 8? Just want to have an idea before I bring it to them. Of course I know they are going to try to trouble shoot the entire engine....

Re: How hard is a carb rebuild?

Reverted to new pump from the kit & pumped a bowl's worth of carb cleaner through using the pump by hand. It really seems to pump well. Put it all together again and got it running. Seems a bit better, but it still bogs some. At this point I'm out of ideas.

Covered the boat up and walked away for the day. Ah, the joys of a free 30 yr old boat :p

My biggest concern with this problem is the hesitation from it bogging when I need to do a quick maneuver. I may take it to the lake and try it under load after Labor Day is over just to get out on the water a bit more this year.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Re: How hard is a carb rebuild?

if the pump shot is working well then the engine just wants more fuel...

the jet in the center with the needle is like a power valve...gives it more fuel on load...if the engine still wants more fuel then bigger jets are needed and I am afraid they arent openly available...maybe if you give Jet Performance a shout they can help...

you can tell if it needs more jet by closing the choke by 1/3 and trying it again...

I'll give it a try. Could these items I've indicated be symptoms related to timing and/or points gap dwell?

very possible...slow timing can cause hesitation

This was it!!! I broke down and bought a timing light & dwell meter/tach and tuned everything. Now it runs like a top! I'm so excited! Now I just need a few more weekends as nice as it is today to get out again before winter.
