I wanted to go fishing on my days off from work but it's always raining. Will fish bite when it's raining? I'm not bothered by the rain but would like to catch some fish.

I dont know about saltwater, but freshwater fishing is good in the rain. The rain knocks bugs off trees into the water as well as washing other things in the water, so the fish are active usually. I wouldnt fish topwater really due to the rain activity muffling your topwater lures appeal. I dont know about saltwater, i would imagine it wouldnt effect them much.

I don't do it anymore, never had any luck. My old bones can't take the cold like they use to plus I don't think the fish like to get wet :D

Dont be afraid to get wet. I go out whether its raining, windy, sunny and flat. The only thing you need to be concered with is the depth (in saltwater) at which the species your looking for is at during those off weathr days. Good luck stay dry and warm and keep on fishin!

Care to share some more?

Cite examples? I'm curious. This is the first I've heard of this. We always skip fishing when it's raining because we never catch anything but unfortunately when it's raining are sometimes my only days off. I feel like the last 15 years worth of spring and fall days off cause of rain have been wasted doing bull**** when we could have been fishing, just deeper! Damn it!

generally when the air pressure changes from a high to a low air mass is when you get rain, Fish don't feed the same during that change, If it is likely to rain for a few days, you are better off to skip the first day,

The fish could care less if it's raining or not. They are however affected by a change in the atmospheric pressures.

How the change affects the fishing depends on the strength of the passing front.

A weak front typically will not have any effect on the fishing. If I change anything I?ll change bait colors because of the overcast. Otherwise business as usual

The fish bite the best on a falling barometer so the arrival of a strong frontal boundary brings with it a great fishing opportunity. The trick is to not get caught out on the water when the front arrives in force. Some of our best fishing is just hours and minutes before the arrival of the hurricane.

All I know is once while fishing on the pier at the beach the fish were there and hungry. When it started to rain rather hard they still kept biting....

if you are talking about saltwater...I dont think it matters and I know it doesn't if you are bottom fishing...just finished a marlin tourney, and after trolling through a pretty bad thunderstorm got 3 bites as we were just coming out of it while it was still raining pretty hard....( the only bites we had that day) ..nothing in the pretty weather... go figure...aside from that I have caught plenty of fish (all types ) in the rain

Fellow New Orleans boy myself. Just got back two weeks ago from fishing in Irish bayou on lake out of New Orleans east. We had the best luck before and after a big rain. When the sun came out they stopped hitting. Early morn and late afternoons are the best times to fish the grass beds. You can catch many fish in any weather. Just put your top up and raingear on and wait out the heavy rain. We hit our limits in 4 ft of water over grass beds using a top water plug for Specs and popping corks for Reds using live and dead shrimp. Sometimes we cast for our own bait ( mullets & crokers ) and do really well on that too. Headed back the week of Thanksgiving. Just can't stay away from home long.

It deoends on what you are fishing for, when it comes to bass fishing it helps it is some times better to fish during rain, defently when it just stops, the rain knocks bugs out of the sky and trees which then cause bait fish to be active and then the circle begans, you while find this same affect in flats fishing for snook, or trout. and as soon as the rain stops the waters while glass out and then it will be good for top water. if your snook fishing it helps due to stiring up the water then forcing fish to hit on instict rather then hunger.

I think fishing in the rain is great, saltwater or freshwater. It gets everyone else off the water and you fish anywhere that you like, all alone.I love it.Just remember lightning is not your friend, lol.

Will fish bite when it's raining?

Two of the best times to fish are when it is raining and when it isn't.

I have found the fish to bite a bit less if it has been raining all day long, but I still catch them. I normally make it a rule to switch to brighter colored lures (rust and purple) when it is overcast. No verified science behind it, but plenty of data (fish catches) to back it up.

I think that in saltwater, at least in this area, a big rain lowers the salinity of the water making fishing tougher. The fish move out to better water.
I have however caught some of my biggest fish in the bay when the weather is rough. Not sure how much of it is that the rough seas mask your presence or if the rough seas are creating a higher oxygen content.

If your boat has some sort of shelter, and there's no lightning, then give it a try. Also keep in mind that when it's overcast and there's no sun shining you and your boat cast less shadows and fish tend to be less wary of your presence.
