I knew about dinner but I didn't know about tanks. What do you call a large above ground container of liquid? We call them vats here ;)

Re: How many know?

Originally a tank was a large, above ground vessel for watering stock. They were filled by a windmill pump from a well. They also served stockmen and hands as a cooling bath and stock-kids for recreation.

When stockmen started using the windmills to fill big holes in the earth they still called them tanks.

Today, any body of water built specifically to water stock is a tank. Most are filled by runoff except in very low rainfall areas, where the wells are still used, often with windmill pumps.

The above ground large metal vessels are called many things. My neighbors call them tubs. I have 100 gallon and 500 gallon tubs. Grandbuddies love the 500. It is 8' diameter, round, and about 3' deep.

It is not uncommon for small ponds. . .less than 5 acres. . .to be called tanks regardless of their purpose. Anything over 5 acres is usually a lake.

Re: How many know?

jRJ & CJY tanks tanks and tanks language is simple here. or more to the point, storage tanks and fuel tanks. tanks or ponds are stock tanks, shortened to just tanks. If your comming for supper come at 6:00, dinners at 12:00 and breakfast is at 4:30 am, after chores, feeding chickens, milking cows and feeding the other barnyard animals. then its time to go to work.

God Im glad them days are over. ;)

I knew that, but I also have strong conections in Kansas where a creek is a crick and ponds/tanks are interchangeable.

and when someone says "what kind of Coke do you want" they don't mean "original, caffeine free, diet, caffeine-free diet, etc." instead they mean "Co-cola, Dr. Pepper, Big Red, 7-Up, etc."
