Depends on the state. Here in Arizona boat titles are not issued. Couldn't get one if you wanted to. On the other hand, a title is required for the trailer under the boat ...

Re: How many of you have bought a used boat with no title ?

Hi,

New to the board, wealth of information here!

Just wanted to say that you can apply for a title here in North Carolina, but it's optional. I titled my last boat and it simplified the sale. I didn't have a title for the boat before that one and I sold it to a man in Florida. Florida only required a detailed bill of sale. Trailers must be registered.

I sold my boat yesterday, simply signed the titles over and that was it. I am going to look at a used boat tomorrow, don't know that he'll have a title or not. But if I buy, I'll probaby apply for a title....I just like having that piece of paper. Title is issued by the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission.

You can still get registration numbers for the side of the boat even without the compliance labels. Just go into a Service Canada branch and transfer the title into your name and where it says complainace label #,.... leave it blank.

I got mine the same way (ON7066523)

Interesting scrobo, thanks -- I might just try that. Also, have they changed the numbering format to start with ON in Ontario? I'm used to the 50E, 60E or whatever prefix based upon region within the province.

Here in the state of Connecticut titles are not issued for boats, you only need a bill of sale. The same goes for trailers under 3,000 lbs here.

...I dread going into the DMV any day of the week up here, whether its for a boat, trailer or vehicle. You better pack a lunch!

Yup.

Starts out ON (or BC or QC or AB or whatever province you live in) then 7 numbers. I'm ON7066523. I bought the boaqt with no title and got the numbers for the side before I got the capacity labels. In fact.. I still don;t have the labels. I'll be waiting a year or so thanks to the speedy processes of Services Canada.

Just hit your local Services Canada location (St. Catharines, ON is on Church Street) and ask for a title transfer sheet, fill it out and then they give you your new reg # for the boat. After you get your capacity/conformity labels you can go back and give them the numbers and they update the paperwork for you.

Re: How many of you have bought a used boat with no title ?

In Missouri they title everything. Boat, outboard, trailer. Last boat I bought came from Wisc. who doesn't title much, but had titled this one, but not the trailer. Had a bill of sale from a registered dealer and still had to have a police inspection. If I buy a boat without a title I research what it will take to get a title before I do. Had a 10 ft jon boat for years with no title as in Missouri under 12 or 14 ft can't remember unless you put a motor on it you don't have to register it. So I wanted to put a motor on it and had to have it inspected before I could get a title. Interesting thing was they titled it as a trident because of the first three letters on the vin. Trident boats I found out was in England and I don't think they made anything under about 30 feet, but according to the MO DMV they made at least one 10 ft jon boat.

Re: How many of you have bought a used boat with no title ?

I have an issue that I could really use some help on. I had a small boat with trailer in Utah and sold it online. The buyer is from Canada. In Utah there is no need for a title on the trailer if it's under 750 pounds. I gave him the boat title but when he went to cross the border, they would not allow it without title for the trailer as well. He told them since it was coming from Utah it didn't have one, but they wouldn't accept that. I researched the VIN from the trailer and it was never registered so there is no info. I went back even further and found the trailer was made by Escort Trailer Service which is now not in business (convenient huh?).

Long story short, I'm not sure what to do. They want a title for the trailer but everywhere I ask says there's no info on it. Does anyone know what I could send that the Canadian border officials will accept? He really just needs to get the boat across the border. He can deal with it from there. Any ideas would be helpful!!

I bought a 1983 FishinSki Barge without a title but got a notarized bill of sale. Do I need a title I am in Georgia, I havent registered the boat yet. The person that owned the boat had passed away and I bought it from his son, it was left to him. Hope there'e no problem with that.
Thanks

In Idaho you register without a title. The back of the registration allows for transfer of ownership.

Re: How many of you have bought a used boat with no title ?

Done so a time or two on jon boats. A good bill of sale, and all blame would go back to the seller, and if he is innocent, and got an good bill of sale, it would keep going back until someone is guilty, or two stupid to get a bill of sale. As for trailers, we have bought many of them without titles, and the ones we built don't have titles. All but one of our trailers are registered as homemade, as you just need a drivers license to get it registered homemade.

EDIT: I read the thread below this one, and learned why we don't have a title. The aren't required in Georgia. I wasn't with dad when he purchased all of them, and the ones I have been to get, we didn't get a title. I guess this means disregard my post, as it is meaningless. Sorry.

Your from Georgia, you know Georgia does not have titles on boats. You can not get a title on a boat in Georgia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: How many of you have bought a used boat with no title ?

how do you prove ownership in Ga? just registration?

in FL about 8 months or so ago i regged my boat and trailer. with title to the boat and not one for the trailer it was in the 60$ range. thats title transfer and registration sticker for the boat and regged the trailer as homemade(per the tag office) since it didnt have a title and weighs less than 500lbs i think it is.

and yeah down here you can get a tag for a trailer with just a drivers license. i flew from FL to OH to pick up some of my stuff i left up there. i got a tag for a non existent homemade non titled trailer down here, few up, went to harbor freight and got the trailer which basicly is a homemade trailer. built it, slapped my tag on it and went on my legal way.

reason for doing so was that the uhaul wanted over 500$ to rent a trailer from OH to FL. i bought and built my own enclosed trailer for less than that and now i have a trailer. that same sized u-haul they wanted over 500 for was like 120$ to get from FL to OH.

Re: How many of you have bought a used boat with no title ?

I bought a titled boat here in Florida and used it 'till the registration expired. Then, when I wanted to get the title changed to my name so I could buy a new sticker, I couldn't find it!! All I had was a bill of sale and the seller had moved!!

I went through hell with this. Bill of sale or not, they wanted the TITLE! At one point the tax office actually did say I should turn it into the Sheriff's office as stolen and buy it back at auction. It took me nearly a year before I found the seller by searching the tax registeries in the surrounding counties. He applied for a replacement title and then signed it for me and that's how I finally got it done. In the meantime, it sat in my drive way for a year and a half.

I bought my present boat from a dealer who specializes in selling repo boats. When I examined the contract closely, however, there was a $50 fee for applying for the title and a $75 fee for the title itself. That's essentially free in the State of Fla! It was simply a $125 add on for their pocket. They readily took it off the bill, but I wonder how many buyers didn't know any better.

Lessons learned: NO TITLE.....NO $$$$$$!

If the boat was register in Ga, you will have to get a notarized bill of sale and send in with the money to change it into your name. As for titles no....not in georgia...if you buy new you get a certificate of origin. But no title. You just need a Bill of sale and it has to be notarized. I know Georgia did away with the requirement for a notary but the DNR stills requires it.

Here in Tennessee you only need a bill of sale, in Williamson County it has to be notarized. You also don't have to have a title for a trailer, but if a trailer is towed behind a company vehicle then the trailer is suppose to be titled, but it's behind a normal residential vehicle then you don't.

Re: How many of you have bought a used boat with no title ?

I bought a 1960 Nylox 16 foot flat bottom with a 40 horse johnson also 1960. The boat had 09 tags but the guy I got it from had got it from another guy in whos name it was still in. The seller I bought the boat from had started to transfer the boat into his name but didnt have enough money or something. Time went on and he had lost the pink slip! What a headache. I simply went down to the dmv with a bogus bill of sale and registered the boat as a unregistered boat. I had a form to fill out and stuff but it went pretty smooth. After filling it out I had a new HIN and a pink slip in the mail. In fact it was so easy I worry that boats can be stolen and have titles the next day! I have since sold the boat WITH the title.
