I got my boat registered today and the title transfered. The registration was 36.00, the title transfer fee was 18.00, and 87.00 was fines because the boat hadn't been registered in the past 3 years. The grand total was 141.00 so I'm not too terribly torn up about it. This is in OK where the trailer doesn't need to be titled or registered. What kind of bucks are you all shelling out for your boats registrations?

Boat registration here is free from the federal government, however the provincial government hits you with a 13% sales tax when you purchase the boat. The trailer is $42 per year for plates, $10 per year for a safety inspection, and also attracts a 13% sales tax when purchased.

Wow, come to Ontario. $10 for trailer plates that last a lifetime and 6% on the boat. Registration of the boat was around $50 if I remember rightly and never needs renewing. May not be exactly correct with the numbers as it was some time ago but all I do now is enjoy the boat.

you're pretty correct. the GST we have to pay on a used boat... which was 7% a while back (since 1990 until about 3 years ago) when it became 6% until July 1st, 2008 when it became 5%. Today If you bought a used boat for $4,000 ... you'd pay $200 in GST.

Buy a brand new boat, OR a used boat at a DEALER you pay the additional 8% which makes 13% total. $4,000 used boat would be $520 in tax.

Plates are $10... one time, never need renewing.

Next year after July 1st, the GST and PST are harmonized, 13% will apply across the board, whether new/used/private or what..

In all examples above, the boat registration is done via Canada Customs, and it is free, and does not require renewing.

I usually only renew my plates in March being that birthday is in October I only pay a prorated fee of around 14.00 for my trailer here in the US we only have to re up our boat tag every 3 years I think I paid 46.00 in 06 but now I have heard that and platable vehicle or towable must maintain current plates even when not in use which blows especially when you libe in Northeast Ohio and can only boat march through August September? and the boat and trailer sit for the remainder of the year.

Wow, you guys are lucky. Here in Taxachussetts(sic) they getcha every year for the trailer ($100 for 5k lbs rating) and every 2 years for the boat ($60). Plus title fees for both when you first register.

Plus sales tax at 6.25%

Re: How much did you spend?

When I bought my boat, I registered it in Kentucky even tho I live in Indiana. Before I get flamed, let me explain...

1. Its legal, all you need to do is tell the clerks office your going to be using it 90% of the time in KY waters.

2. I didn't have to pay sales tax in Indiana, and Kentucky doesn't collect sales tax for Indiana residents. (the real reason why I did it)

3. If the boats registered in KY, you don't need to plate the trailer. I did, however, plate the trailer in Indiana... thought it might be a good idea since the truck has IN tags....

To answer your question, the first time I went to the clerks office, I paid $58 for title transfer/registration. Plates for the trailer was another $50.

Your state might have laws saying usage... that's if it's in the state for more than 90 days, etc. It's the state your in that you have to worry about. Your all good unless your state finds out.

Re: How much did you spend?

I think I paid like 46 bucks for 3 years in North Carolina (where I live) for the boat. The trailer I believe is like around 22 bucks a year. I really SHOULD have registered the boat in Tenn. though. I (summer) dock it @ a lake there, and by Tenn. law that makes them the area it is "primarily" used at, so it should be registered in that state. I had a friend get a nice (110 dollar) ticket for the same thing by Tenn. lake patrol. I may change the reg. this summer, or press my luck and just ride on the NC reg. My boat is trailerable so I think I could it sneak by.

Yikes! On the bright side for you, local seasonal slips around here are $3600 and up for a 30 footer. I understand that's cheap for the area. I was shellshocked.

To transfer a trailer, boat or car title here cost like $80. The boat registration (sticker) cost $15 for three years. Trailer tag $10 a year. Slip fee (my carport) is free.............. :p
