How much epoxy?

I read on here nightly for several hours and can?t wait for the opportunity to get started turning my ugly duckling into something I?m proud of. I?m starting to restore my 1974 Mark Twain, it?s going to be in phases as money comes available. First I want to replace the dog house as the one in it is too small and not in very good shape. After debating between an aluminum frame and a wood frame, the choice came down to cost and ease of build.

The dog house will be constructed with a frame of 1X2?s, outside will be sheeted with 3/8? ply, the inside will have ? foam sheeting, then covered with ? ply. So essentially there will be three layers to the dog house. First question is do I need to glass all the joints, or all the joints on the frame, or just the joints on the inside and outside. Second how much epoxy do I need to waterproof 4 sides of a box measuring 28x26? inside and out?

Ayuh,... Considering your Budget,... I'd use Poly resin,+ csm for waterproofing...
It also sounds like you're really Overbuilding it...
The 3/8" plywood,+ the foam should be Plenty... I'd drop the plywood inner-liner...

The reason for the inside ply is I want to finish it off and be able to build in a speaker box as well.

What's the thought on using 1/4" on both inside and outside?

Still any ideal of how much resin it takes to water proof the motor cover?

Well,... you mention 26x28,... How many sides,..??
Figure the total square footage of the area to be covered,+ buy atleast that much CSM,+ enough polyester resin to cover it....
Probably a Gallon.. Maybe more...

1/4" both sides will be just Fine,... Especially covered with mat,+ resin...
When you finish it,... Sand it just Smooth, not through the coating...

Should I also apply resin and cloth to the frame as well or just the inside, outside and edges?

Re: How much epoxy?

I have a steering wheel from a correct craft of 1970. It's plastic but in great shape.

You'll need about a gallon - maybe two. No need to do wood on the inside even if you want to put speakers in it. Just 3/8" ply throughout with some foam if you need it to be quieter.

We had a 74 Mark Twain runabout with a 70 Chrysler outboard for about forever that I miss dearly. When my parents divorced, my mother sold it for 500 dollars to some random guy who came out to fix the plumbing. I could have choked her. Not really, okay maybe just a little, okay not really.

Thanks for the offer but the steering wheel I have is in good shape, I just like the look and feel of a wood one. EDIT

If harvest would ever actually end I could start on my boat!!!

Re: How much epoxy?

I just finished some epoxy work on my 18' Grumman (search Grumman 184 to see the tread).

I glassed the heck out of a 30" tall by maybe 55" wide transom, and all the floors front to back, top side and bottom side, with a gallon kit of System 3epoxy. That's over 17' of 50+ inch wide 1/2 ply covered with 6 oz glass cloth on the floor alone.

You have a much smaller area, so you'll have plenty left over if you buy a gallon kit (one gal resin, 1/2 gal hardner)

BTW, I paid like $118 or so for the resin from a place called Merton's in Springfield MA. He's a super nice guy, very knowledgeable, has a decent web-site, and does ship. I won't go anywhere else for my glass and resin materials.

Re: How much epoxy?

I'm finishing a 15' duck boat and I used RAKA epoxy from somewhere in Florida. Great people - great product.
