how much fiberglass do I need?

Hello,
I have a 16' Hydra Sports SX265 Bass Boat. I was trying to estimate the amount of csm,1708 and resin I should order to restore the deck, stringers, and transom area the right way?
Any help would be appreciated.

I have an old 16' Skeeter that I'm restoring. My fiberglass shipment will be here tomorrow so I can't answer for sure, but I ordered 15 yards of 1.5oz x 50" mat, 10 yards of 1708 x 50", and 5 gallons of resin. I'm in the ballpark with the glass, but I know I'll need 3-6 more gallons of resin.

the way to determine the amount of glass is easy once you have done a boat fifty times....lol

ok....take the transom first.

you will need 6 layers of csm to do it....2 for the bond to the skin....2 for the laminating and 2 for the inner transom.

that is 6 times the beam.....

so lets say your beam is 7 feet.....that is 6x7 feet.= 42 feet for the transom.

now you need one ...possibly 2 full legnths for the stringers, depending on how high they stringers are.

remember, you are going 4 inches on either side of the hull and up each side of the stringer....

so....if your boat is 16 feet....then you need 16 feet per tall stringer and just one 16 foot piece if you have a short stringer.

now the deck......it will take 2 widths to cover a deck. you want to do the under side.....so that is 16 feet x2= 32 feet
the top of the deck gets 2 layers......so that is 32x2

you will also need 1708 .....one width for the transom.... 7 feet.
one for short stringers......16 feet.

you will also need a 6 oz finishing cloth for the top of the deck....
that is 2x16...so.
that is 11 yards rounded up for waste.

that is a total of 26 feet of 1708.
9 yards rounded up.

the csm is....7

32 feet for 6 0z veil

the csm is 122 feet or 41 yards.

the resin calculations can be based on those numbers.

this will give you lots of excess cut offs for tabbing, and seat bases...ect

Thanks guys,this will help me to get started on my materials list. I will post some pictures as soon as I find out how to upload them from my cell.
One other thing if I may ask, what would be the best material for building the stringers? Mine were sooo rotted I have no idea what they were made of.

We mostly use 3/4" plywood for stringers and bulkheads and 1/2" or 5/8" for the deck.... ext. grade ply or undrlayment ply is all you'll need covered in csm and resin.... 1 layer on the bottom and 2 on the topside.... i went with 1 layer of 1708 biax for my top side layer....csm and woven together

This info will help me to continue with my planning. I have started work on the boat. I have the cap removed, old deck and foam out, next I plan to remove the transom then start the icthy process of grinding the hull. I'm having a hard time trying to find a tyvek suit large enough to fit me (very big boy) lol.

Hello Rider .. welcome to Iboats ..

When you find a supplier for your suit..buy one size Larger then you think you need ( you can always tape up loose fitting spots .. but you never want a crotch blown out ! trust me on this LOL ) .

All you really need is a tape measure and pencil and pad.

Draw it out mate..

Its just like any other build .. you should have Build plans. Before ripping everything out..make your measurements and document Everything during the deconstruction phase. Simple drawings will help you more then you think .. you can plan out your cuts with fiberglass ( some scrap goes here..some scraps go there..)

Plan your Glass .. how much do you want and were. Do you want/need 2 layers of mat for the trans to transkin..do you want/need a layer or two of glass binding your two transom pieces..how much do you want on tabbin..how much are you planning on doing What and Where.

If you had the available materials On Hand ( like us that have rolls and rolls of stuff..and a whole woodshop full of scraps etc ) then it would be kinda easy ..

To save $$.. Plan it Out..

Also, remember when you're planning that a yard of glass actuall measures 36" x 50".

In regards to the advice provided by Oops!, I'm still trying to learn how to use the forum and I have not discovered access to the "photo bucket". I'm like a baby in the woods, I will have to ask a lot of questions of you guys to get a better understanding of how to use all of the tools in the forum.

Thanks Yacht Dr., I will definitly remember the advice on "crotch blowout" (lol !!!). I got off to a fast start and forgot to write down some of my measurements. but i will go back and do this before I start to grind the hull. I am going to O'Reilly's auto parts to pick up my tyvek suit this afternoon in hopes that it might fit. I am a member of the 300+ society and things are hard to find super-sized here in south Georgia.

http://imageshack.us will let you upload photos without signing up for an account. The only drawback is that I don't believe you can retrieve them/display as an album. I've had an account with them for years without issues.
