Re: how much fiberglass do I need?
I didn't get to work any today, very tired from hull grinding and not getting enough sleep due to
itch apnea. lol
Question #1 Do I have to try to sand the color of the redwood off of the tramsom?
#2 What do you recommend to glue the transom to the hull with, PL or PB? Also to glue the wood together for the transom.
I've read a lot of posts and there are different methods used
Q#1. Yup..Grind till its all bare raw glass ( dont dish it out ..keep it as flat as you can ).
Q#2. Ive never used PL so I cannot say one way or another. It really depends on the condition of the fiberglass. Sometimes I use a few layers of mat/resin..sometimes I use Fiberglass Putty ( because of miss-shape ) . I have never used a 5200 type product. Not to say it wont work..just never used myself nor have I ever seen it used.
Q#3. I always use Epoxy to Lam 2 pieces of ply faces together now. I have in the past used resin/mat..but I find that Epoxy is Way better now. Not to say that you cant use a layer of mat or slurry of resin/silica .. but Epoxy is my personal choice now.
Lastly..the Itch Apnea .. ( this should be in the sticky thingy up top IMHO ).
Before you put your clothes on Grind Baby powder ( Talcum powder ) aggresively into your skin ( I mean hammer it in like suntan lotion when your nice and dry ). Wear Only Cotton clothes ! Before you put your grinding suit on..dump a few loads of Talcum powder down the arms and legs and Crotch. .. Grind away.
Have only Cotton Bed Sheets ( poly blend sheets will make it worse or even silk or satin is even way worse). Smallest count sheet bedding I have found to be the best..so if you have 1400 count vs. 600 count sheets the 600 will feel better for you.
Try not to touch any part of your body to each other when grinding. Meaning..while grinding try not to rub your arms against your legs or your hands rest on your legs..or anything else touch each other. Even if your in a suit it will still get in there.
When you get out of your suit ( which is most likely sweaty and very hard to get off ) get Directly into the shower. HOT as you can stand it ( Hot water will open up your pores ). Do NOT start just soap scrubbing up and down on your arms/legs/Feet. Work in ONE direction. Away from Torso and out towards your hands and feet. Never Wipe Backwards ! It will push in them little glass shards. When your done cleaning..turn your shower to the Coldest you can stand it and just sit there in the cold ( this will Close up your pores ). Then when drying off with a towel again move in one direction ( or none at all just dab/pat yourself dry ).
Not hope it helps..It Will help
