How much should I offer for this boat?

Not sure the year or who makes it but here are a few pictures. All of the wood is rotten and the seats are no good. It's winter so I have time to repaid it and I don't mind doing the work I just need to get it cheap enough so I still end up with a good deal after cost of repairs. Trailer is in good shape

The hull looks great. The exterior plywood, fiberglass, stainless steel screws, carpet or vinyl, new steering....... about $600 but then you need a motor too. Yep, that's a project and might as well include re-doing the transom too since it is all rotted.

If you can get the hull and trailer as is for about $750 or less I would go for it.

For a motor I would look around for anything between a 35-70 HP but that also depends on what the hull is rated for.

On the surface it is a money pit.

Basic aluminum boat rules....... NEVER use any pressure treated wood (it reacts with aluminum ) and Have fun.

We are close~~~ boat and trailer $500 TOPS. Adding $2000 at minimum and unless skilled and handy it will take a little more than 200 hours. Now we have to find a decent motor~~ $1500 - $2500 minimum.

Why not just buy something needing little or no work and enjoy boating while spending less money and time? By the time this project is finished, figuring your time is worth nothing, you will not be able to sell it for what you have in it. However,,, you can have fun and it will keep you off the streets.

Thanks for the replies guys! The starting offer I was thinking was $500 and my top dollar was $750 but I wasn't sure if that was unreasonably low. I think the guy thinks its worth more than it really is.

I've got an 01' yahama 40 horse that I picked up for 800 bones. I can do all of the repairs myself so I'm only looking at paying for materials.

Guys if it takes you 200 hours to replace a little plywood and carpet then you guys are slow as hell!

I've got an 01' yahama 40 horse that I picked up for 800 bones. I can do all of the repairs myself so I'm only looking at paying for materials.

Guys if it takes you 200 hours to replace a little plywood and carpet then you guys are slow as hell!

All the 200 hour guys only look at glasser restos. We've had some turn out a cosmetic (deck/transom) resto'ed tinny in a couple of weekends and full blown in a month. Not many, but its possible. And of course some never end. :watermelon:

The seller does have all the paperwork, doesn't he?

You got that right. It doesn't look like he ever plans on fixing it so I think I'll offer him $500 and see what he says. I figure the trailer is worth 300 or so, so if I can get it for under 800 ill feel alright. All of the hinges and hardware are in good reusable shape so I'm looking at maybe 4 sheets of plywood max ($200), steering is there minus steering wheel ($50), assuming the gauges are bad that's another $150. Don't think I'll go back with carpet... Maybe roll in bed liner? $200. $600 plus $200 for random ****. I guarantee I can do it all for less than 800 but on the high end 800 bucks to get the boat on the water.

So:
$800 for mint 01 yamaha 40 hp
$500-700 for boat/trailer
$600-800 for repairs
$1900-2300 total.

Any costs that i may be overlooking? I live on the Mississippi coast and used boat parts are everywhere so I can save a few bucks there. I think that will be one hell of a fishing skiff for less than $2500 bucks

Yes he does but in Mississippi all you have to have is a notarized bill of sale to get it registered anyhow.

Do you have the controls for the yamaha? A fuel tank?

Restorations will nickle and dime your wallet ........... but it's worth it!

Yep motor came with controls and a brand new 6 gallon tank.

To me it looks like an early Bass Tracker or Tracker II which would make it early to mid 1980s. If that is what it is then I believe those were rated for a 50hp max. Been on one once that had a 35hp Merc and with 3 adults it performed alright. So that 40hp Yammie should be a good fit.

Agree that $500.00 would be a fair price. I was able to pick up a 1984 Lund S14 DLX with a side console and trailer minus engine a few years ago for $400.00 that was in a little better condition. By the time I was finished I believe I only had another $800.00 into it including the 35hp Evinrude.

The glass adds weight and cost and in a boat that may only have a 1000 or 1200 lb total weight capacity everything that is added has to be included when adding up capacity.

I used a wood sealer and 6-7 coats of spar varnish on the plywood in that Lund and after 5 years it's still holding up very well. Sure the Ply that I left exposed to the Sun is starting to look as if it needs a new coat of varnish but the wood is still solid. Marine Top coat paint would also work just as well and still be cheaper than glassing.

$500 and then I wouldn"t "restore" it like he had it; just gut it, add two seats and a small bow deck, and keep a basic open jon boat.

removing the LU is the least of your concerns n only takes a few minutes to pull.... yank it... you should install a new impeller anyhow

I can pull the LU no problem but is a prop shaft on one of these little yamahas difficult to change? Special tools? I'm a handy guy but I've learned some things are just easier (and eventually cheaper) to have done at a shop.

Hmmmmmm. You might find out that it's just a wee bit more work than replacing a little plywood and carpet..... If the floor is gone, then you'll likely need to replace stringers, foam, plywood, carpet, seating and transom. Stringers will need to be re glassed in, transom cut out, replaced and re-glassed in, plywood properly epoxied and re-glassed in....and that's after all the grinding down you'll be doing. You'll also end up finding lots of other problems while you are in the process of this. HM Hawker has it about right.

On the plus side, you'll have a great new boat when you are done.

pckeen, this is an aluminum boat there are no wood stringers.
