I make the kids wear one the whole time, I don't it would make it harder to get out of the boat if something did happen.

My wife has worn one all the time, and I have always made my kids wear them. It is the law down here in Texas, all under 12 have to have them on all the time. For me, I wear them as well, mainly to be a good example to the kids.

There is something to be said about the size of the boat and PDF's.

If I owned a 30' cabin cruiser, I don't think I would be wearing a PDF, or even the kids as long as they are inside. But out on the deck, they would. (I think that may be the law, but not sure).

Both my boats are small so I feel it is mandatory to wear a PDF.

I can see the logic that the larger the boat, the less the need for a PDF. But I think most members here have 20 something footers or less, and lots of members have under 20 ft boats. The smaller the boat, the more I feel a PDF is required at all times.

Not just your's but it allows you to save someone who does not have one.

Agree totally with above and would also add that by wearing your pfd you are less likely to put someone else at risk by having them go in the water to save you.

I can see neither of you guys have experienced a non-swimmer using you for a ladder in the water or had the crap beat out of you trying to get one to shore. I would rather take my vest off and throw it at them. First question I ask at the pier "Can you swim? How well?".
The typical Type II PFD is not going to help 2 people...simply not enough floatation.
Interesting noone has mentioned throwing devices.

2/3 of all boating accidents are drownings.
90% of those did not have vests on.

Here in MD, children 7 and under are required to wear vests at all times, as are skiers, wakeboarders, tubers, etc.
A throwing devices is also required to be on board.

I got out a of ($50) ticket once (stern light out) because my grandson had his PFD on. He got a blow up beach ball out the deal from DNR.

I have several on board but only use it in bad weather, at night when navigating by moonlight, running in flooded rivers, or when the water cooler than what would be comfortable to swim in.

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

I flopped off the boat once trying to lip a fish. I was alone, and the water was warm, so I rather enjoyed the swim until another boater came over, boarded my bass buggy, and hauled my lard a**** up onto the rear casting deck.

I could have powered myself aboard with the engine by climbing on it and tilting it up with the auxilary switch, but it probably would have done some damage to the cowl.

I had some time to think of the deep doo-doo i'd have been in if the water was cold. Now I wear an inflatable vest that is so comfortable that I often forget to take it off before I drive home.

I plan to use it this afternoon, perhaps the last shot at fishing before the boat is overcome by the drifting, whistling snow.

Good point. I had training many years ago. And someone drowning is in a panic and will clamber on top of whatever they can, including you. That is why when saving someone, you must: A) get them on their back with your arm under their chin and pull them back to safety that way. There is plenty of flotation for two people in one vest when doing this. B) Punch their lights out and pull them back unconscious. Of course, this was back in the 70's and they may have adopted a more kinder approach to dealing with the pannic stricken..... "everthing is going to be OK, just go a safe place in your mind and chant your favorite montra...." LOL!

I carry a throwable flotation ring, but a throwable flotation cushion will pass Coast Guard inspection in place of a ring. I prefer the ring.

Always, I can't swim. :( As soon as I back the boat down the ramp, I put the truck in park, set the brake, put on the vest and launch the boat while my wife parks the truck and trailer. :)

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

I usually don't wear mine , unless bad weather. I too make passengers have one on if they get in the water , on tubes , skis , or if they can't swim or the youngsters.
The biggest lake I am on is about 15mi long and about 2mi wide. Most of the time I'm on a lake that is around 700 acres.

However , they are readily accessible and in sight of all onboard:)

One option not given in the poll is "when the motor is running".

When my dad and I were in a bass club that was one of the rules and it has stuck with us since. Putting it on also keeps it from blowing out of the boat while underway. PFD's stored in a hatch might as well be left at home.

When I am on the way I wear my vest. I am only using a type III though and it doubles as a fishing vest.

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

not often enough i suppose.....

at the local watering hole. (2k sq. acre lake) i usually don't. usually boat with two people (we cab help ea. other out). we sit on throwables and the life jackets are right next to our seats. however, if the weather comes up. or i walk on the deck. i will put a pfd on. basically, if all looks good. i don't wear one. if anything looks threatening. i put one on. i boat on the Missouri river too. i usually wear one while doing that. it just depends on the threats that are around as to weather i do or don't.... includeing if i want to drive fast, or if i'm just putzin along.....

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

Good Topic!

I must say that I rarely use mine, I've only had it on a few times in pretty dicey conditions. The problem is that it's about impossible to fish with a huge life vest wrapped around your neck.
I'd love to find one that could be worn all the time which is either a part of a jacket or one that is unobstructive to both movement and view.
Those common foam filled orange life vests will all but block your view when driving let alone make it just about impossible to fish and handle the most basic functions on a boat.
I've tried several types, most ride up over my head, and none which I've tried has actually floated me in a swimming pool test. I've tried vests, and those jacket types and neither will keep me from sinking, so I don't put much value on them I was told by one manufacturer that I need a big man's life preserver, not the common vest, which is meant mainly to keep you afloat and face up if unconscious in the water. I tried and the result was me slipping right out of the vest regardless how tight I tried to attach it. The best result was a Stearn's life jacket style with two leg straps, but even that didn't keep me on the surface and rode up far enough to let my head go beneath the water. I've not tried the inflatable vests, I suppose they would work the best but again, they have to stay on to be useful. At nearly 300lbs and 6' 3" tall, most of the jacket style vests, even those in 3 and 4x size, look like I'm wearing one meant for a little kid. I'm not particually fat, just big. I wear a 2X jacket on land and have a 40" waist, there are far larger men out there than me. I wonder how many others have actually tried their life vests to see what to expect if the need arose.
In most cases its not that the vest won't float me, it's that it won't stay on.
Several all but ripped my face off as I slid out of them, several left me hanging with the straps under my arms and my head beneath the water. This was in a swimming pool, not in rough seas.
The best one I found was actually an old military type life vest which straps on with cotton straps which when wet seamed to not become 'slippery' and slide upward. Even at that, I still hung from the vest by my neck with the straps unable to stay wrapped around me. What happens is that the vest will slide up to the point where the straps hit my arms, at this point however, my head is far below the water and if unconscious, I would assume that my arms would just straighten out over my head and let the jacket slide up till the belly strap either passed over my head or caught my chin. Most could float my weight if I used them as a float cushion and secured them to my chest but they still only kept me within reach of the occasional breath of air.

Are there any suggestions in for a more functional life vest? I can't be the only one who doesn't have the natural ability to float? (I once won a bet that I couldn't walk across the bottom of a huge swimming pool using nothing but a snorkel tube, I won that bet).
I am one of those people that can only swim far enough to save myself, and have no ability to stay put in the water, I can only stay on top if I keep moving. The incentive to get out of the water is the only thing that keep me moving and on top. I always figured that if I people were meant to swim, we wouldn't need boats. If I were in a situation where my boat was going down, I wouldn't rely on my life vest, I'd be more apt to hold on to either my self inflating raft or my ice chest till I got out of the water. (Both of my boats have Co2 inflating life rafts, which can be inflated by simply pulling a handle. Whether in it or clinging to it, a 6' raft won't sink even with me clinging to it, nor will a 150 qt marine ice chest.

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

One suggestion that I would make is for you to test PFDs in saltwater, not in a pool. If you are boating primarily in salt water, this is a better validation (or lack thereof) of the ability of a PFD to keep you afloat. The reason for this is that salt water is more bouyant than fresh water, so a PFD that may seem to be marginal in fresh water, may be OK in salt water.

I also recommend calling customer service at Sterns, or other manufacturers. You are certainly not the only large person who has run into problems finding a comfortable and effective PFD. I suspect that these folks might have some suggestions for you.
