Looking at the makeup of the "Brand Poll", that has been here for awhile, has prompted me to see how many people utilize "modern" engines rather than older designs. This poll is not meant to infer anything about one engine being "better" than another due to age. What I'm interested in is why the "Brand Poll" is so far off from the national brand averages for purchasing over the last ten years. Based on the information from this poll I intend to follow up with one or two more to refine the results.

Please keep in mind that I am only interested in the newest engine that you own. IE If you have five engines I would appreciate it if you would only consider the most currently manufactured one for this poll. Poll results are anonymous so there is no reason to be embarrsed if yours is past it's prime:)

Thanks in advance.

At present, motors vary from 1978 to 2001 - subject to change at the first good deal!
I am looking for a small antique for decoration in my Norman Rockell-ish themed den.

Newest is 1984. You don't seem to be interested, but the oldest is 1918.

Re: How old is your newest outboard?

I think there is an obvious answer to why the poll results here at iboats does not follow trends with the much larger population of outboard motor owners. I believe we are a group of folks who are much more likely to work on our own motors, so we have the skills to keep the older motors going. We also tend to own older motors because they don't require expensive special tools to service. All of this being the case, the basic time frame involved gets into the years when OMC and Mercury motors held the lion's share of the market, and the ownership stats probably are reflective of that fact.

I suspect that you are correct. Regional use, the average age of an iboat poster, etc, probably have a lot to do with it. In two months I plan to follow this up with a further poll regarding what I imagine will become evident by this poll. However, research like this can illuminate areas that we never suspect and often overthrow what we take for granted.... :)

Re: How old is your newest outboard?

Up here in the tundra we have a relatively short boating season and our waters tend to be a little smaller than the "big ponds" some of you get to play in. It is not unusual to see many very old motors on very old boats up here. They are used primarily for fishing -- run to the hole, drop the line, and run to another. So motors tend to last a very long time and probably see less severe service (no salt water). In the remote areas of the upper U.S. there is also less disposable income so people just make do with what they can afford and they don't worry about "new and pretty". There is a 62 year spread between my two oldest Johnsons and newest Suzy.

Re: How old is your newest outboard?

Newest is an '88, oldest is a '36. I am 15, and live about an hour north of Atlanta. Does that answer all your questions? :D

My collection contains:
1936 OMC (Not Evinrude) 4.3 horse Service Twin
1948 Johnson 2.5
1949 Johnson 5
1955 Johnson 3

And my two functioning motors:
1975 Evinrude 40 longshaft elec. start tiller. (main motor for 15.5 foot jon)
1988 Evinrude 4 horse Deluxe. (Kicker motor for above boat)

And yes, I bought all of those, not dad.

Re: How old is your newest outboard?

In Buffalo NY, which is in the "rust belt", and has never recovered from the economic issues of the 1980's, many of us make do with what we have, until forced to replace the motor.

Being in freshwater, with a 6-month sailing season, some of these outboards run "forever" as long as they get adequate maintenance. My 2007 Nissan 9.8 was purchased to replace a 1974 OMC 15 that still had points-and-condenser ignition -- and still ran as it always did since new. Of course, the new OB's are quieter, and use less fuel. There are also more prop options for the new motors.

One major factor in my purchase decision was fuel economy. When gas was $4 or $5 a gallon, the new motor could potentially pay for itself -- in fuel saved -- in a few years. Of course, now that we're (presently) down to $2 a gallon, that's not as much of an incentive, but the new motor will still pay for itself in fuel savings over its lifespan.
