So it always baffles me how hard it is for people to sell stuff on Craigs list. I am 100% self employed and make a VERY healthy living doing nothing but buying and selling. For example I bought the below boat last Friday for $300 off of craigs list. The only thing I did was remove a bad valve in a gas line and a new hub on the trailer. I had $350 in it. Sold it for $950 and made a quick $600. Sold in 24hrs.

Now part of the problem the original seller had was his ad was crap. I'm not a advertising guru but I have learned a few things that help. The BIGGEST is learning some basic HTML code. You don't even have to know the code just find a free online HTML editor. This alone will let you greatly clean up your ad with decent pics, larger/bold fonts etc. Next list your phone number and price. Unless its something that really has my eye I wont even consider one without a price or #. Compare my ad to his ad. The links are below. He had his almost a month and said I the first to look at it. The problem he had was crappy photos and the fact it took 3 emails just to get his phone #.

My ad... Sold in 24hrs for $950 with second offer for $850
http://ksu.craigslist.org/boa/1353510102.html

His ad... Sold in a month for $300
http://ksu.craigslist.org/boa/1305588560.html

If the previous owner took 30 minutes to clean up his ad he could of gotten $1,500 out of it easy especially with it being listed at the beginning of August.

Now thats the selling end of CL... The buying end is easy. I surf the site hourly. I look for the crappy ads that have been sitting for a few weeks. I love old ads with crappy pics. Once I find one I call them up and get as much info as i can get over the phone. Then the biggest thing is to see if they got room to budge and how desperate they are to unload it. Any answer is fine as long as they are serious about getting rid of it. Anxious sellers and bad ads make a great combo. From that point its just a matter of low balling untill you get someone to bite. My line is often something along the of well I already have plenty of toys but if the price is right I would be willing to take it off your hands. You say your wanting $1,000? Well I don't wanna offend you but would you consider $250? Never offer say $950. Always start LOW. I see ads all over for say $1100. That basically means they want you to offer $1,000 and make you think you got them down. Instead of a $1,000 offer them $400 and see what they say. Worse case they will say no and their true absolute low price will surface.

Sorry for the long post. Just my experiences. What do you guys think? This is what works for me but everyone is different. Anyone have any other tips or secrets?

Re: How To Buy & Sell On Craigs List

I buy everything off craigslist, my whole boat and almost everything in it.

I flag any ad that doesn't include the price, its not ebay.

Sometimes the poor ads aren't because they don't know how to mkt, some people are like me and just don't care about money,
I've never sold anything on the list,
I just give it away if I don't need it. But then I've got a job.
Its a great resource anyway.

What about title and taxes, or are you a dealer? Here you'd get raked over the coals trying to take a second handed unassigned title to the DNR/MVA.

The trick to that is; only have the seller sign it and DO NOT DATE it.
Then, when you sell it, it has a clear, signed title and you, the seller, now can put a date on it and the buyers name on it.

It boils down to the DMV and the IRS that orininal owner sold to new owner. You were, essentially, never a part of the equation.

For me I wouldn't look twice at an add like yours is written, I hate it when somebody says things like $50 bucks and a days labor and you will have new interior, I dont know about you but most people are not Upholstory guys have you ever tried recovering a seat and have it look anything like factory? that and I wouldn't buy anything that is not in your name regardless, I had a buddy get in trouble because someone stole there family members vehicle and forged the signitures on the title to sell it and said they did what you did, he ended up loosing a couple of grand and the vehicle. I am not trying to bash you but just saying I personally would look at the old sellers ad before yours, but that also may be because I don't like paying top dollar for old stuff either. Good luck to your future sells.

Doing that in Florida is illegal and in every other state where I've lived. You might want to double check the laws in Illinois before posting publicly on the internet about what you're doing.

And I'm certain that you're also reporting all this publicly announced income to the IRS as well, right? Have you been keeping up with the news? The IRS is now checking public forums like myspace and facebook to catch folks with questionable taxable income.

Good luck to ya.

Whoa, easy there. I NEVER said I was doing this. I simply explained how it is done. It is illegal here in Illinois also, but that does not stop people from doing it. It is illegal to be in possesion of any title that is signed and not dated, or not signed by the buyer. He asked a question, I gave an answer. Now, I may or may not know people who practice this art, that is how I know how it is done.:(

I have and will not accept a title I, myself, did not personally witness being signed and dated. I also expect a bill of sale.
Next time I will be more cautious and include this minor oversight on my part.

We have to have a bill of sale with both owners names signed on it. So you'd have to get the PO to sign a blank bill of sale.

I got caught in this mess a long time ago bein naive and won't do it again with another seller trying to turn a boat/vehicle.

Took me an extra 6 weeks to get everything registered.

So when can we expect to see the infomercial - "YOU TOO CAN MAKE $12 THOUSAND A MONTH BUYING AND SELLING BOATS ON CRAIGSLIST. JUST $10 AND I'LL TEACH YOU MY PATENTED METHOD" ?

Re: How To Buy & Sell On Craigs List

Well... I see your style of ad often and consider it someone "giving it the ole salespitch".... I don't have a problem with it, but the style doesn't do much for me... The original owner's ad seemed straightforward and got the point across... IMHO, yours has more words and better picts, but not too much more info. One thing I didn't like was this.....

I am selling it because I have a large 23' Wellcraft but thought my girlfriend would like this one. Turns out it sits most of the time.

To me it implies that you've had if for a while and are selling it b/c of it not being used enough.... A little misleading? Don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against flipping a vehicle/boat or whatever, but when buying I really want to know the true history as much as possible. Anytime I call about something, I always ask how long they've owned it... So I'd rather you say you just bought it but realized it's not what you need than make up something that you think sounds better. Normally, if something doesn't fit with how the thing is being "pitched" and what the true history is, there are signs that it's not what it appears. Once the "radar" is on, I start looking real close at things that otherwise I might have taken the seller's word on. Ads that are too "salesmany" get the radar on before I make the call....

Just my $.02... your mileage may vary...

Here in Kansas all you need is a bill of sale no title. I guess I'm not suggesting a get rich quick deal just offering some suggestions. My company is a registered business and is liscensed to sell realestate and firearms. From my understanding boats in Kansas can be sold like most other items.

No luck here, I'd be in well over $300 in tax, title, and registration fees between the DNR (boat) and MVA (trailer). Plus trips to two separate govt entities and a trailer inspection at a certified garage to boot.

Re: How To Buy & Sell On Craigs List

i did a couple craigslist flips, like that, actually i've had more luck buying on craigslist and selling on ebay. I got a free bimini(needed straps, but great aluminum, decent fabric), a free trailer(in far better shape than the one that came with my boat, just had to adjust the bunks) and 300 dollars off one zodiac that way. Also with ebay listings aim to end at a time most people are home, Sunday evening seems to work well for me, off topic but still useful information.

I really appreciate you posting this piece of information as I was wondering how you were able to tactfully make such a low offer and not offend the seller. What you say above makes a lot of since. I may try it because a guy near me has a hull that I want but it needs new floors, has a Force outboard that needs works and sits on a rusty trailer. He wants $2000 for it (which he hasn't a prayer of getting) and I was thinking $500 would be a more reasonable price.

Re: How To Buy & Sell On Craigs List

As we are getting ready to put our house on the market, we are selling a lot of stuff on CL and giving away a lot of stuff that has little to no value. No need to call any of those "junk" hauling companies.

I do my research and then usually cut the price by about 25% and then list it. I am very up front and honest about it's condition. Since I already cut the price, the stuff always sells. Sorry, no haggling. If I something valued at $100 and I priced it at $75, I'll cut it up before selling it any cheaper.

My only long term post was trying to sell a '92 Hurricane 240 Midships over the winter. That post took 4 months to sell, but it did sell.

And yes, I do give away older stuff. A couch with a hole eaten into one of the cushions (new puppy), a couple of window screens, a bed frame, a bunch of 386 software, etc. Every Free posting gets me 12 or so immediate responses.

I have never bought anything as we are decluttering and the Bosslady would pitch a fit if I brought anything extra home. That said, I do watch for a golf cart (I can buy used from a dealer at the same price), a snowblower (all look horrible), and an air compressor (all look scary). I also only look at ads with photos.

Duke - I agree that your ad was a little misleading. Sounds like you had the boat for quite awhile and didn't need a second boat.

I flip boats(and anything else of value) on a regular basis but my system is very different.
I run a handyman service on the weekends (work a full time job during the week)
I take anything of value in exchange for labor.
Repair whatever is needed and resell on CL, not only do I get my labor paid for but make a few bucks on whatever it is I'm selling, which more often than not is a boat or auto.

Re: How To Buy & Sell On Craigs List

When I look at a craigslist ad, my eye is on the background as much as it is on the item I'm interested in. IF it's in front of some junky, nasty place I'm not interested. In your case, it's not even in your yard as best as I can see, so I know it's probably not even your personal boat. I don't buy stuff very often from used car salesmen. Your boat, however, looked really nice and if it ran well, I would think was well worth $950. The merc actually looked nice, too.
If you're a flipper, you should say you're a flipper, IMO. Nothing wrong with that.
