How to change drive shaft in lower unit

Okay, I thought I had everything correct when I ordered my new lower unit, however, it turns out that I have a 30" shaft rather than a 25" shaft that I thought I had. So now I have a new lower unit but it has the wrong length shaft. I was told on this forum before I ordered it that I could change the shaft as long as they were both 1 piece shafts (which they are). The question I should have asked at the time was "how hard is it to do just that?"

I have a Clymer service manual and all it does is tell you how to take the entire gear case apart and it is pretty daunting and requires special tools. Is there a better way to do this or is that what is required? If there is another way, please explain because I'm worried now that I just wasted money on this lower unit.

Re: How to change drive shaft in lower unit

First off, the shafts are 25 inch and 20 inch--no one makes a 30 inch shaft yet.

Second, to change the drive shaft, it is necessary to remove the pinion gear. The whole lower unit must be disassembled to do this. No other way.

You didn't waste money--just re sell the lower if you don't want to swap shafts.

However, if you post your location, perhaps someone close to you on the forum would want to swap them for you

My location is now posted in my profile information. I am located in Newport News. If someone is semi-close and willing to help, please respond here or PM me.

Another question, would a typical local marine mechanic be able to do this or will they need special tools to work on Force motors?

Any Mercury dealer should have the ability.
