Sorry, this is not my boat, it is a customers. Therefore, that is the way he wants it.

Didn't mean to jump down your throat... it just still kills me when I see wingnuts on a boat battery :)

...And when I put them on, they get tightened with a pair of channelocks...

Maybe someday he will learn to carry a well stocked tool kit with him...

Why? Convenient, easily tightened with a lot of different items other than a wrench if needed, made of brass, spin quick with a finger once loosened.

I think you were a little hard on the guy. Wingnuts were made for a reason. Nothing wrong with them if used properly. Even helps when moving electric motor from one boat to another, etc. :)

In defense of the owner, I will say there is only one manufacturer that requires hex nuts on batt terminals, that being Mercury, on Verados. They even include the 2 nuts with each rigging kit.

I like hex nuts w/lock washers...but then I carry a VERY well stocked tool kit on board...:)

Actually, just about every manufactorer specifically states in their service manuals (and this is for both OB and OB) on about page 4 to discard wingnuts and replace them with stainless steel nylock nuts.

I've seen it in Mercury manuals, Mercruiser, Yamaha, Suzuki etc.

OK. But will NOT having wingnuts lower my fuel consumption or help me catch more fish? Didn't think so. :D

Re: How to check gages!

NOT NYLOCK NUTS, hex nuts with lock washers! Any corrosion build-up on the terminals can cause the excessive force required to spin the lock nuts to dislodge the terminals from their connections within the case of the batt!

That is why Verados are shipped with a pair of HEX NUTS! No other builder requires them!

Note the word REQUIRE. That means it is a warranty issue, should the usage of hex nuts not be adhered to...

I work for a major OEM builder. I install Verados, Optis, Etecs, Suzukis, Hondas, Mercruisers, and Volvos. Only Verados, because they are so voltage sensitive, require hex nuts...you have to supply your own lock washers...

Re: How to check gages!

OK enough about the battery cables! lol
now back to my question
1st the fuel gage I checked the voltage at my sender and read like 5.71 volts so I have come to the conclusion that the piece in the tank is bad and yes checked the voltage at the tank.

2nd the volt meter when I checked it I was getting right at 11 volts and yes the same when I checked the battery now the gage goes from 10 to like 15 volts but it never moves off 11 volts so I really think it is bad!

3rd the tach I really think it works cause when I turn the key switch on it seems to jump a little but not sure it hooked up in the motor so, I removed the cover to find like 3 maybe 4 burnt wires. now one wire that was bare and twisted together was on the bottom coil pack to the bottom cylinder the other wires where on the other side of the engine and seems to have something to do with that bottom cylinder one was broke and went up under the flywheel on to the back side the other was caroded and had a melted look went up under the flywheel to the front. What size wires are these usually and what could be the problem.

I traded for this boat up until this weekend I only had about 3 hundred in it, When I traded for it me and a buddy of mine and the guy I traded with took it out on the lake a little over a month ago. the boat actually ran sweet and is very fast, it did seem to have a little miss but nothing like what I found under the shroud tonight. I can wait to get the motor running prime, I'm sure it will get on down the lake then cause it had to be running on just 3 cylinders . Oh where does the tach sender wire connect to on the motor.
Anyone got any suggestion!

Thanks

Ok found out how to check and both my voltmeter and fuel gauges are bad not sure about the sending unit in the tank but my guess it is too! only one I need help with now is the tach.

but I think it could be a problem on my motor, so can someone tell me where the wire goes to on the motor .
