Hi guys, I took the carb off my 81 25hp evinrude and it is filthy. Could some of you tell me the best solution to clean with? I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: How to clean carbs?

Best way is to get a gallon can of carb cleaner with a dipping basket- I use a soaking carb cleaner made by Berryman, has about 3 qts of cleaner and a basket in a gallon can. This is some pretty potent stuff, so make sure you are using rubber gloves, and not the flimsy latex ones.

Get a service manual. Read the top secret files at the head of the forum.

Take apart the carb, incl the jet(s). Soak over night. Rinse off carb cleaner with water, blow out all passages with water and reassemble with a new float and new gaskets.

And replace the fuel lines with Marine fuel lines, not automotive type. Good Luck!

Not sure if there's a marine type fuel line, but make sure that the fuel line you get is ethanol safe. If you go that far to change fuel lines, might as well get a new primer bulb, just in case there is pieces of deterioriated fuel line in it.
And use worm drive hose clamps, not the cheap spring type. And don't over-tighten.

And change ALL the line from the carb to the tank, alot of people forget about the lines under the cowl.

Alot of carb problems are caused by old crumbly fuel lines.

Also a fuel filter is a must, even an inline from Autozone is better than nothing and yes there is Marine Grade fuel line, what the diffence is I don't know but it does exist.
