I remember the knob goes up and down to cover the shift rod end and the little plastic piece but can't see how it works. The knob screws up and and has threads inside but nothing to attach to. I will check the library manuals but doubt if they will help. Thanks.

Jasper,

I found the upper brass piece in the box with all the other parts. The original bottom part goes up and down, where this other lower unit has a one piece. It should work the same way but I may have to turn the bottom to adjust the shift lever. It was turned all the way in. It's so simple, yet complicated.

Ok, here's the way I do it...

1) Make sure the motor is in reverse. This lowers the upper shift rod.
2) When connecting the linkage, hold the lower nut, while turning the upper nut. I was told to avoid turning the lower nut as this will adjust the shift rod height.

Jasper,

You wouldn't happen to know what the shift rod length is and how to measure it? It has the long shaft. So far I adjusted so it would go into F-N-R. If this motor is a good one, and I believe it is, I'll get an OMC manual. Thanks.

In the manual it says..."Thread the shift rod into the shifter yoke until the rod bottoms in the yoke". If you look closely at the top of the shift rod, you'll see you can thread it in with a flat blade screw driver. So, if you have it screwed in all the way like the manual says, I think the height should be fine.
