Yeah I plan on putting a trash bag over the prop and probably some shrink wrap over the holes where you'd normally put the muffs. Water inlet. My outdrive is as low as it goes there. About 1/2 inch maybe inch from the ground.

Your tent set up looks great although you might not want to do the wrap on the outdrive. Post that idea in the mercruiser forum and I'm sure a aome of the guys there would advise against it.

Oh? what's the reasoning behind that? Mine was to stop water from doing down inside the prop and collecting and then expanding when it freezes.

I'm thinking its that the plastic will cause condensation with the daily temp changes and if it leaks it will fill up. A few boards to make a dog house would be enough to keep snow and ice from getting into the exhaust. Another option is to pull the trailer up onto some ramps, blocks or jack it up and use stands so you can lower the outdrive all the way.

Dang it would be complicated. OK thanks for the clarification. I'll have to rethink this one now because I agree something as simple as a tear in the plastic from blowing in the wind could cause it to fill up.

or pull the drive. that way it can be serviced over winter at your leisure.

Nah I'll skip that. I pulled it earlier this summer when I purchased the boat. Replaced all seals etc. and put fresh oil in. When I drained the oil a few days ago nothing but oil came out. No water. So in the spring I'll just put fresh oil in and go.

Yeah I agree, you also don't want to open up your gimbal bearing to the weather.

Re: How to deal with snow on boat?

I used to keep my boat stored out back and felt I did a good job keeping the snow and weather out of my boat. I was quite surprised a couple years ago when I unwrapped her in spring, and started looking in the live well and other hatches I left ajar to keep the moisture from building. What I found in just about every nook and cranny was walnuts from the massive tree I have out front. I think there were at least 2-3, 5 gallon buckets of walnuts stashed everywhere. both live wells, the rod locker, glove box, they were everywhere. On the first spring fishing trip down in the Detroit river, we were tossing the walnuts (I missed) out as we drifted down the river fishing. Many of the other guys fishing were commenting about all these dang walnuts and where they were coming from as they fished the same stretches of the river. I bet we threw another bucket full out on that trip alone. 1 Box of moth balls and few drier sheets seems to keep the squirrels from making my boat the storage unit for their wither dinners. I still am finding a few here and there, but they have moved on for the most part. I also store the boat across the street behind a rental home I have. Not so many nuts over there.

Re: How to deal with snow on boat?

I rigged this up. Kinda modeled it after the Navigloo. Seems steep enough that the sbnow should just slide off for the most part. Just used pvc pipe with wood footings and duct tape around the joints. I used duct tape as I want to be able to take it all apart for storage during the summer months. Tarp is 20x30. Hopefully it holds up!!

So far so good with this setup! Survived 2 straight days of 100km/h wind gusts, couple snowfalls, the ice storm we just had which attached about 6mm of ice to the tarp, and another 2 days of 70kmp/h wind gusts the other night. Just a few more months to go!! Hows everyone elses holding up?

I rent a storage building for the winter. A boat is too big of an investment to rely on $20.00 tarp. best money I spend on the girl as far as keeping it nice.

I use a 55 gallon contractor's bag that covers the entire outdrive and prop. Contractor's bags have heavier plastic than leaf bags and hold up well here on the NC coast. Lots of wind. You just wrap the opening around the outdrive as close as you can to your transom and tie it off with some line.

Re: How to deal with snow on boat?

Cheapest way....... build a steep a frame and cover it with a blue poly tarp. Steeper the peak the less that will accumulate 2x 4 are okay and even 2 x 3 which are cheaper

x2

I used to go the PVC way with my previous boat but found it's a lot of trouble numbering and storing them when not in use. Now I simply made a tall A-frame out of 2"x3" and cover it with a 20'x30' tarp tucked under the boat (I lift it from the trailer a few inches to squeeze the tarp under), instead of using bungees.

Do what I did, just build a pole barn and slide your boat inside, no worries, no snow.

Then the roping lol

We'll see how this holds up

This has held up good so far. After the snow melts I get a little pooling in the bow but I just walk up and pull tension on the tarp and it all dumps out.

Re: How to deal with snow on boat?

I had to make this two posts since the forum said sorry can't post more than 8 pics.

I see I never posed my outdrive/prop protection. A $5 trash can from walmart lol

In my '86 Bayliner, I use a 6' stepladder and a 4' stepladder, and a heavy duty tarp to top it off. ;)

If and when snow turns to ice, that gets to be very, very heavy. :cold:
Best to sweep off the snow before that happens...

Whatever it takes. :)

Re: How to deal with snow on boat?

Probably just as cheap, after buying all the materials and with no aggravation at all till spring to just have it shrink wrapped. just my opinion though
