EDITED with help from Don S.

Hello, I've been trying to get my boat fixed now for about 3 months. The boat is a 1973 glastron with a ford 302 Engine. It also is a Penta 270.

The part I need is the main forward gear in the Drive Gear set in the diagram linked here (Number 13 for the Upper Gear housing). The entire Drive Gear Set is about $1200, but if I can find just that gear it will be much cheaper. Is there a place I can see that set expanded and the parts inside it?

Apparently I need that gear for a 1970-1976 model since Volvo has been bought out a lot

The parts are available for a 280 drive, but being a 1973 model, I doubt you have a 280 outdrive. Pictures, SN off the top of the outdrive where the helmet attaches, maybe even the model of the engine could help ID what you have.

Sorry, I believe it's a 270. My mechanic said 280, but I'm pretty sure it's a 270. I don't have the boat with me so I can't get any pictures. There is a Ford 302 engine. Any idea? The mechanic said the entire outdrive is available for like 1200, but the part should only cost about 150 if we can find it.

We are stuck because we can not find a Volvo 280 Outdrive Main Forward Drive Gear because volvo doesn't make the part anymore.

To start with, all gears and bearings, and seal kits are readily available from Volvo for both the 270 and 280 outdrives.
The problem is, I am not sure which gear you are referring to.

The mechanic said the entire outdrive is available for like 1200, but the part should only cost about 150 if we can find it.

Has this mechanic ever seen or worked on a Volvo drive before? You also can't "machine the old gears" so they will work.

Just go up and look just above your original post, and click on Volvo Penta Parts. Then follow the links to your 270 outdrive.

Don, I just wanted to say thank you for all your help with this. I'm new and trying to learn. He has worked on Volvo and others for a marina. I believe he was a volvo dealer for a while. He was the only mechanic also nice enough to look at my boat within 100 miles. He searched for a part that would work in my outdrive for a while and just couldn't find it.

Since the gear was still in tact and needed repairs, a machine shop said they would look at it and see if they could fix it. They were unable and in fact ended up shattering the gear while finishing it up because the steel was too hard.

Just go up and look just above your original post, and click on Volvo Penta Parts. Then follow the links to your 270 outdrive.

He told me that Volvo has been bought out 3 times and the original manufacturers do not make the part anymore. He told me that I'd need to find this forward gear for a 1970-1976 270 Volvo Outdrive since they were bought out around then and the design and parts changed while keeping the same model number. I'm trying to do more research with the link above you gave me and find the exact part, then figure out if it will actually work in my old outdrive which is 13 years older than me.

EDIT: I found the part he said is bad. In the upper gear unit there is a part (number 13 the "Drive Gear Set" for the 270 Part # 839027). He said this is still made and sold and costs around 1400. He said that the gear inside that unit, the main forward gear is bad, and that part should only cost $150-$250 if we can find that part, which we cannot.

I think your guy has is backwards. Volvo has bought a number of ventures over the years, but they produced the Aquamatic drives beginning around 1960 up until the bought OMC and introduce the SX in the early '90's

Have a look

I edited the post above yours when you were typing this I think jsut to let you know. So you think the new part may work? I'm looking into it and hoping.
