How to fix engine splash from transducer? (see pix)

I'm having some problems with a spout of water rising up and hitting the side of my motor at speed. I suspect that it is because of my fish finder transducer. But I can't tell if it is hitting the nose of the transducer and deflecting up, or if it is pushing up through the mounting bracket. Either way, I have to fix this.

I think I have two options :

1) Raise the transducer up so that it is no longer "skimming".
2) Fashion a cover for the transducer bracket so that water can not come up inside the bracket.

Take a look at these pix, and let me know what you think please.

raise till it's flush with the bottom and angle it nearly the same as the hull.

Well for one thing, even though it is on an angled transom, it is not level from right to left. This is a tuffy because the back of the boat is on an angle. You just need to play with it until the splash goes away. You can even tilt the nose of the ducer up a bit and see if that helps.

Ya lol. I had the same problem last summer but it was spraying in the boat. I just had to raise it up a bit so the water isn't blasting at it at high speed. I was lucky I didn't rip it off or damage the transducer. I don't think a fish finder will work at high speeds anyway.
Looks angled parallel to the water to me just that it is a little too low. At least an inch
Can't see where on the transom you have. Picture is too close. Suppose to be attached close to the lower point of the transom.

I see this all the time and have done it myself. The transducer you have is known as a skimmer style and should just barely skim the surface at speed but be fully submerged when your fishing. Most of these have about a 20 degree cone angle so you can raise them up quite a bit before the hull will interfere.

I always thought that they would keep me out of trouble at speed and wanted them to work when I was cruising. I finally realized that since they were mounted on the transom and my boat was zipping along at 35mph there wasn't much chance of them keeping me out of the mud. That's when I raised mine up and got rid of that irritating splashing.

Mine works at all speeds. It's just a matter of getting it mounted correctly.

This has been common with the HB xducers. The new ones come with a plug to fill that hole. Other have made plates mounted under to block the hole. A cheap simple fix is to use black electrical tape to wrap around the mount covering the hole. Be careful to not raise it too much or you may have issues on plane (poor Reading) do to turbulance.

Contact Humminbird. Tell them you need the rubber "Transducer Insert".

They should send you one for free.

Yessir, it's the mounting bracket gap, Plug it w/the "insert" or wrap it w/elec. tape.

The Humminbird transducer is already pretty well streamlined, once you install the insert in that hole. Humminbird is aware of the issue and will send you the insert plug for free. Takes 2 minutes to install. Wrapping with electric tape works while you're waiting for its arrival.

Or just ignore it until you get your insert - the transducer seems to work just fine even with that "rooster tail"

i moved mine from the straboard side to the port side of the transom, poof, no more rooster tail .....................

Or you could move it inside the boat and forget about it. 2" fwd of the transom, near edge 1" from center of keel, degrease and rough up the surfaces of the boat and ducer bottom, mount with epoxy...minimum bubbles, sloping as the hull is shaped is ok for 30 or so ft. If you have a thermal sensor as part of it I have compared my inside mount to my trolling motor mount and a couple of degrees of difference is all that I notice and that could be in the calibration of both.

Transducers are sonic percussion instruments, not microwave radars based upon the emission and reception of electromagnetic waves, sir. Aluminum re-transmitts sound as good or better than any material. I have had, including current boat 3 tin lizzies and I assure you they don't have a problem with sonic transmissions, but also can translate water temp within 2 degrees if your transducer is mounted inboard.....BTDT and current boat is rigged that way and is displayed numerous times on this site.

Try it, I know you'll like it. WOT readouts are better, actually you can read the bottom at WOT which I never could on a transom mounted unit and you won't knock it off fishing heavy timber or mis-aligning your boat while trying to load it on your trailer in heavy cross wind situations.

I'm not positive, but I think you can't do this with the newer down scan/side scan transducers, since the side scan goes out 180 degrees to the side of your boat.
