I'd hate to step on it by mistake. Ouch!

Transducers are actually a little crystal device that, when hit by electrical impulses it vibrates producing sound waves and when hit by sound waves on the way back, produces an electric signal. Most ducers are either cut for 200kHz or 50kHz. Placed in the water like an outside mounting or inside as I mentioned they vibrate the surrounding medium and send out the waves. Once the sound is emitted, it then functions somewhat like a normal Radar like used for weather, where the signal is timed and as returns are received, they show up and the time delay is how the distance is measured.

So, on alum boats transmitting sound, when is he last time you spooked your fish banging around in your alum boat? As we both know they are renound for being noisy, i.e. easily retransmitting sound into the water.

I'm not positive, but I think you can't do this with the newer down scan/side scan transducers, since the side scan goes out 180 degrees to the side of your boat.

Makes sense. Surely the instructions include mounting precautions. If not trolling motor mounted, the only other place would be the transom and one side would have significant blockage from the engine. Interesting question.

That was another reason for inboard mounting and my fiberglass family play boat was inboard mounted.

IMO every pic I see in this thread has its ducer too low.
I mount my ducers with the center of the ducer even with the running surface of the hull. The ducer is set back a bit and remember water rises as it leaves the trailing edge of the running surface.
Here is a pic of mine. I can read 200' plus at 50mph.
You can also mount of piece of King Starboard to the hull and mount the ducer to that. Done this way, you dont have to reseal the screws and wait for the sealant to cure each time you make an adjustment.
