I bought a '98 Johnson 9.9 elec start for my sailboat, figuring I would wire a starter button and be good to go. I see now that there is no F/N/R gear selector like on my 5hp Nissan. Also since the John has no tiller, I have no throttle control. I guess the elec choke could be wired to a switch. My reasoning for not getting the remote - is cost, and with all the sailing lines in the cockpit, I'm sure the throttle lever would constantly be snagging the lines er sheets as we salty dogs call them. I have ordered a service manual to help with the start & choke issues. Any ideas for shift & throttle control? Is there a cleaner/better way than the factory remote? thanks for any and all suggests thrown my way!

Just a thought, but for shift control, visit an electronics surplus store and buy three heavy duty 12V solenoids. If you are a little mechnically inclined, rig them up with forward, neutral, and reverse buttons at the helm. Forward and reverse would be no problem since its a simple pull for either function. Neutral would take a little thought as it requires movement from two directions. Two solenoids could be used for that with a single button. Which solenoid does the pulling would depend on whether forward or reverse was selected last. You have the choke figured out (another solenoid). Throttle could be a stepper motor obtained from the same surplus store. Two more buttons (one increases speed, the other decreases it.) You then have interlocks to figure out such as start in gear protection. Sure you don't want the standard remote?????

I'm not sure what you mean "no F/N/R gear selector". A 9.9 Johnson has a shift lever for fwd., neutral, and reverse, on the stb. side of the motor. Did you buy a damaged outboard where the shift lever is broken off?

If the motor does not have a tiller handle, either someone removed it or it is a remote control style motor. You can add a tiller and throttle control to your engine. See a knowledgable dealer.
