How to remove throttle shaft?

Can someone tell me hoe to remove the throttle shaft from the engine side of my 1988 Force 50 hp outboard? I noticed that the line on the roller and the throttle "plate" don't line up like they're supposed to per the Clymer manual and it states to take the throttle shaft off the engine side to move the throttle plate forward until it just touches the roller. It also says not to remove it fron the throttle side as damage could result. It looks like a ball stud with the coupler going over the ball, but I don't want to just pry it off if that's not the right way.

First loosen the lock nuts against both plastic ends. Then take a small needle-nose pliers or open-end wrench and pry it off the ball on the tower. If it is relatively new and in good shape it won't break. If it is old and hard, it may break. You do not pry it from the throttle cam because the cam is thin aluminum and may bend. After adjusting the length, re-tighten the lock nuts but don't get too happy--too tight and you will split the plastic fitting.

HOWEVER: If the roller is not touching the cam, the throttle roller is on an eccentric screw. The first thing to try is to loosen the nut on the back and turn the roller.

Re: How to remove throttle shaft?

If you look at the plastic eye portion of the heim joint, next to the lock nut, just up from there in the plastic is an open groove, you can insert a flat screw driver into that groove and slightly pry the plastic eye portion of the ball joint open just far enough for it to slip off. Wish I had a pictured diagram better to explain this because after breaking about three of those I finally figured out how to remove them correctly. Since we're talking about this, why in the hell couldn't they have just made one side left handed thread and the other right so all you had to do was just loosen the jam nuts and adjust the rod. Not very good engineering or fore-thought there.

The roller and cam are touching, but the line on the cam and the line on the screw head aren't lined up like it shows in the manual.
