How to set spark advance on Evinrude 85 140 VRO

I have read over some things that have been posted on here and I can't find anything about the 140 hp. I went out stripper fishing last night and when I was trolling for some time the motor would sputter out. When it went to do it again I put it in neutral and raised the timing advance on the controls. Put it back in gear and was fine for a little while.

You will need a timing light to do it. I dont have a manual for that motor.
Hows it go when not at idle?

It will sputter after its running for awhile. I have new spark plugs, wires, rebuilt and cleaned carbs. The screw on the spark advance is out a lot. I will take pic when I get home if it stops raining.

You are confusing outboard spark advance - timing - with automotive engines. An outboard idle speed is set by changing the spark advance so there is no actual setting, just a range. The spark advance on an outboard is done at full speed, unlike a car which is set at idle. Outboard idle timing is also normally at AFTER TDC where car motors are BEFORE TDC.

If your motor sputters after a while, it is not a timing problem but likely recirculation system or valve blockage, improper temperature, or carb and linkage problems as well as ring, cylinder, and piston condition.

I have 1985 johnson 140 j140tlcos. I started using seafoam every few tanks. It smothed the idle. No sneeze or cough. idles nice as can be now all day long... might be worth a try.

I've been adding the marine sta-bil each time I fill up. How fare out is your spark advance screw? I will try the seafoam.
