How To Test T-Stat?

I have a 2005 Yamaha 25hp four-stroke. When last run 2 wks. ago while flushing motor water was luke-warm to warm with a sometimes spuddering pee-stream, not the steady stream I'm used too with this motor.

So I took the T-Stat out and I really don't know how to ck & see if the T-stat is working or not. Do I need any special tools? I'v read where your suppose to drop the t-stat in some hot water and see if it moves or opens up. Is this the usual way to ck?? I will also change out the impeller after the t-stat fix.

Any advice is always appreciated

No special tools.
I take a small pot, fill it with water, suspend the stat in the water with a short wire.
Heat it up and measure the water temp with a thermometer, It should open within 10% of the value stamped on the case.
Piece of cake!

Hot water test is the best way to test it. New thermostats are dirt cheap and if there is any doubt, replace the thing.
