Re: HP to Weight Ratio

LOL
Nothing amiss. I have run 40 at 5000' but mine's an inboard built for making a smooth wake. Your's lifts the hull and has efficient running gear. Mine makes smooth water behind at any speed and corners on rails. You probably get better economy than me at full throttle but I probably get better economy at 25 mph.
Any mid cabin cruiser that can run 40 at your altitude is doing pretty well. :)

Yes it does! And my beer stays cold in the fridge, wife can whip up lunch, the dogs sleep happily in the bow and no one has to see my butt when nature calls. And that's a good thing! :D

Boat's 3000lbs. Motor's 205hp = 14.6lbs per horse. Will hit 52-53mph on gps with 1/2 tank of fuel (56 gallon fuel tank).

PS: Hey fireman, retirement's treating you pretty well it seems... Sounds to me like ya may have a little too much time on yer hands, though:p. You've got a beautiful boat, but maybe ya didn't realize when ya bought it... It's not a waterborne crotch-rocket:rolleyes::D Seriously, though, I think you've got plenty of power and enough speed to get you out of impending trouble. Enjoy your retirement, and enjoy that floating fishermans townhome:D!!!

Re: HP to Weight Ratio

I have twin 250 HP engines. I weigh about 10,800 lbs dry. I estimate 12,000 lbs loaded up, maybe a little more. I'll use the 12K figure. I am somewhere around 24 lbs per HP.

On a good day I can hit 45 MPH at WOT according to the GPS. On just about any day 43 MPH at WOT. Not bad for a 30' cruiser.

I don't have that great of a need for speed. I do want a boat that will top out at 40 MPH minimum. I like to cruise 26 MPH to 32 MPH depending on conditions. I like to have the 40+ MPH to outrun bad weather to a safe harbor when needed.

That top end has saved me from being caught out in open water many times. I have a radar that will pick up storms 50 miles away. It has come in handy too several times.

I'm about 4500 lbs wet with 320hp so that's 14lbs per HP.

I run 55 mph with almost full fuel (60+ gallons) and 2 adults aboard.

I like the PWC's I just hate the constant maintenance of them, Maybe someday I can find someone to let me try one of those with the PROPER horsepower/weight ratio's!:D

bad luck on pwc's? I've got a 97 and 98 seadoo's, I literally have done nothing to them other than change stator oil once a year. I've had them both around 5-7 years, and every single boat I've owned through that timeframe has required more maintenance/repair. Might just be luck of the draw!

Cabo.....36,000/500=72 WOT=35kts
Penn Yan.....4500/220=20 WOT=20kts

Interesting.

Retired for 6 weeks now and it's been fantastic. Still running the upholstery shop, but it's on my schedule. I highly recommend the retirement thing. I got lucky and got into the profession when I was young and was able to leave @ 44 y/o. Still young enough to do things before I kick off.

I know the boat was never built for speed. I've done the 50 mph on water thing most of my adult life. I've now moved on the determine that as long as the TV's works, the A/C is on, the blender is running, and the hot water is available....that the best part of any boat trip is getting there. It will move quick enough to get me away from incoming storms or the occasional pirate, but if it starts to rain, I just get out of the channel, drop anchor, and have a beer below while watching the football game!

I wanted to upload a pic, but the new format isn't letting me...

14.5 lbs/hp loaded/2 people. 1990 Baja 265 DVX 454/385 carbed. Just under 50 gps WOT, but over 30 at 2800 RPM with good economy and flat ride in 3 footers. Baja just made a great boat for the great lakes. I'd love to have a new boat but have no need with the performance the old one gives. .

Yeah just a bad overall experience, I have never owned one myself but we have a large crowd that USED to have 6 PWC's combined and they were just a hassle that I didn't want to tangle with. I rode them briefly and had alot of fun but at the time they were just more of a pain then what they were worth. Now I am at a point where I like easy, if my kids want that kind of fun they are old enough to buy them themselves.....I am semi retired in that part of the family toys department!

Is that speed per GPS or speedometer? Sounds too slow to me. My boats 3000lbs dry. 205HP = 14.6lbs per horse. 1/2 tank of fuel and average load, I top out at 52-53 by GPS. By your avatar, your hull looks like it's designed more for speed than mine. With your weight/HP ratio, I'd think you'd be hitting close to 60mph, maybe even 61-62.
You might want to look into that. If something's robbing you of speed, it's probably robbing you of fuel efficiency, and possibly engine life. Do you keep your boat slipped in salt water? Maybe full of barnacles and sea-grapes?
Anyone else have any thoughts???

Now boys (and girls) keep these numbers real, not your dry weight but practical loads. I spotted you 2.35 lbs per hp in my estimate vs. dry weight, play fair!
