Re: hull extension in progress with picks

quick update here.....the day the transom plate gets cut out is fast approaching....so i have to get a lot done, the gas tank support needed to be built and glassed in.

as well, i need to replace the wood strip that serves at a backing plate for the cap screws/rivets.

the first thing i needed to do was pull the cap back to allow acess to the bow area with out crawling on my knees and smacking my head

deckingset8008.jpg

it took three peple to move the cap backwards.

deckingset8009.jpg

enough room was needed to work in the bow.

deckingset8010.jpg

the reason the cap was put back on fot the floor instlation......was that the sides of the boat can flop outward and once the deck is glassed in....its allmost impossible to get it back on.........so the cap is allways put on for the deck tabbing.

deckingset8012.jpg

with the cap hanging that far off the back of the boat....it needed to be suported........it hung there without supports just fine...all the weight on the extension section....but it held just fine....but supports were in order for safetys sake.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

with the cap moved back......it was time to build the tank support......this board was cut and the bottom glassed a few months ago......

deckingset8013.jpg

i was not the one that cut it....my buddie did...and he said it fit perfect......

well.....it didnt....it took 2 hours with a grinder to shape this one correct.

deckingset8014.jpg

this board is actually on a slant...nose down so it needs to be shaped perfectly for the bow.

deckingset8015.jpg

there is a few gaps...but it is close enough for what i need it to do.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the riser had to be made from scratch.....as well...this is 3/4 inch pt plywood

deckingset8018.jpg

because these peices are angled.the edges of these peices cannot be the standard 90 deg...the edges needed to be ground to the wedge shape of the hull....each edge is feathered back allmost to a knife edge

after the raised bulkhead was made......it needed to be glassed on the back....so more glass was cut

deckingset8019.jpg

i also made a few peices of 2x4 that the tank support would sit on...and glassed them into place.

the problem that i encountered was the resin was really cold....it was around 40 deg in the shop at that time.....the resin just kinda glurped out of the can.

i needed to come up with a solution, as the big space heater isnt working in the shop.

deckingset8021.jpg

while the resin was cooking, instead of sitting....(and freezing) i found a quick job to do.

deckingset8017.jpg

i wanted to cut some holes for some decking lights i bought.....the chalkline was for a longitudnal reference, the tape is to protect the gellcoat.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

then the template was tapped into place........if you look really close to the pic....you will see it is upside down......
that is because one side faces forward....and to cut it out correctly....the template needs to be rotated for each side.

deckingset8022.jpg

once the cut out was traced onto the tape....a dremmel was used to make the cut out.

deckingset8025.jpg

the dermmel did a nice job.

deckingset8027.jpg

i would have finished the instlation....then i discovered that there was no backing flange for the set....so it would just be bolted to the fiberglass hull.....well.....that is a case of gellcoat crazing waiting to happen if i ever saw one....so i will make metal flanges tommorow.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

with my resin warming on the light, the riser peice was finally ready to go in....and the top board was rested on the newly glassed in support boards.

deckingset8030.jpg

once in place......the tabbing glass was cut....again...this is 1708 bi ax.

deckingset8029.jpg

the enitre gastank mount was glassed into place.

deckingset8031.jpg

ill have more updates comin tommorow.....

cheers

Well, how about a system that gives you the best of both worlds? Have you looked at these? http://www.bowhuntersspecialties.com/minn-kota-mk55em-engine-mounted-55lb-thru555512.html

I installed one for a guy on his 21' Bayliner (Volvo Out Drive) and he is in love with it. No, its not "fast" but it certainly does a bang up job of quiet trolling with 55lbs of thrust.

...

oohhh I like that. and oops could put some solar panel on the closed bow covering to charge the batteries. I like that

i think the upper area is for the battery's and just below and in front is where the gas tank is going

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I am confused, I did not see a fuel line ran to the front of the boat before installing the deck??? Uh oh....

huh?....fuel line?......do you mean there is SUPOSED to be a line between the tank at the front and the motor at the back??????

this is a high tech boat.. everything is wireless.. even the fuel delivery.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the origional set up was to have all control lines up under the gunwhale in the cap....

i had thought long and hard about the fuel lines...the sterring and shifter lines elec and the 4 water heater hoses that will need to be run.....i was going to go pvc tubing under the deck from front to back...
it would have been slick.....

unfortunately...logistics dictated that i could only run them thru pvc on top of the deck....im actually kinda upset that i couldnt run them under....but that would have posed a bazillion decking questions and cuts where i didnt want them.....so in typical boat trade off fashion...the simpler above deck won out.

As good as you are at fiberglassing, you could extend the inner sides to go down futher before you gellcoat and finish everything on the cap. that would give plenty of room.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Those lights are slick Ward, I was actually considering putting a pair of them on my 17 footer, though I don't know if I have enough of a flat spot in front to mount them on a tri hull like mine....maybe. I sure don't want headlights that make the boat look goofy-eyed.

I'm curious about the fuel tank and fuel delivery....are you going to have to run an electric fuel pump to feed that stroker? If you do, then the fuel lines could easily run under the gunwale. Heck, my glastron has copper tubing going from the front gas tank to the outboard...I don't see why it would be a problem-though I think an electric fuel pump would avoid the problem of having the prime the engine with a bulb! Of course a fuel pump would have to be regulated....

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok....ill try to answer a whole shabang with one post.....

first off....i will be running 4 pvc pipes from front to back...one elec....one control..(shifter and sterring) a seperate fuel pipe...(just feed the rubber line thru)....and one for heater hoses.....(hot water from the block...a feed and a return)

these will run on top of the deck but stacked on the side of the boat....the will be hidden by the bench, and drivers side shifter console...

as far as the fuel pump.....the old mechanical...sucked fuel really good all the way from the bow !
of all the problems i ever had with the boat....none of it was the fuel pump....so im gonna run a stock system....)unless the engine demands a elec pump) ;)

hey bud ....when we satarted we were all new at this..:D

it is my hope that i dont get too technical, so anyone can read and figgure out how to do this....

sometimes the jargon gets a little weird.......like a stroker with a b3 and 1.50 ratio with a 26 ptich.....the more you read here...this above simple statment becomes very clear.

but as far as the sander, i use a 7 inch rubber backing pad...(sometimes called a flapper) with a 24 grit resin backed sand paper disc.

that is for heavy duty grinding....i dont suggest somthing that heavy unless you are really comfortable with a grinder.

uasually 36 grit will rough the fiber glass up enough for the new layer of glass.
as far as making the glass smooth for painting i use 120 grit......so it really depends on the job at hand.....

my grinder of choice is a 5 inch dewalt....(my second one in 8 months)
however el cheepys from the local tool discount store, will work well with a smaller rubber backing pad.

i hope that helps
cheers..

I don't comment much but I'm watching.;)

Some ideas... Use the grey pvc pipe (schedule 40? not sure). It's not as brittle when it's cold.

When you go to pull your wire into your "conduit", always pull a "pull string" in with it. If you decide later to pull a new wire you use the string instead of having to use a fish tape (pita and can nick your wires) or sacrifice one of your existing wires to use as a pull string. And again, attach a new pull string to your new wire and pull it in too. :)

386....you just comment when ever the heck you want to :)

i just talked to toucan.....

we are thinking of adding another empty conduit just for the fun of it...

and we also decided on a lot of string in there :D

thanks on the tip of the cold crack on the pvc...i wasnt aware of that...it can get really cold here......not 40 below....but it is possible.
