bought the boat of my dreams last weekend after much searching and a few rabbit trails looking at old Lone Stars....1964 Starchief I/O with the original 120hp Murk-cruiser. nearly all original, was the MacGregor sailboat dealer's personal boat, tons of nice little touches like fuel flow computer and automatic halon fire system in engine bay, all very professionally done. flloors are all good and transom has already been replaced.

i love every inch of its non-stylish, non-curvaceous, lots o screws to tighten, teak lined butt.:rolleyes::cool:

where else would you find a cabin cruiser that you can tow with a VW camper? paid $1600 but it's been sitting for years so i have lots of work to do on it....expect it will be 2500-3000 before it's seaworthy. engine may be seized, in which case i will probably find a 140hp drivetrain from a title-less Craigslist boat rather than deal with those dreaded letters "NLA". i do my fishing in the Sea of Cortez off sonora, Mexico (no coast guard or vessel tow) so it needs to be 100% reliable. i'm sure i will have lots of Qs for the board as the work progresses. will post pix once i downsize em. jonesing now, though, as i can't start working on it til i get new trlr tires and get it home from Albuquerque....:)

CB, thanx for help getting those up!

yeah, i got lucky after i see the sad soldiers many folks have rescued (and here's to ya for doing it!)....most of my problems are merely due to UV deterioration (boat was in ABQ, NM at 5000' elevation for 30+ yrs) and not having been run in years. expect i'll be going through many cans of Wurth contact cleaner and penetrating oil!

ordered my trailer tires, Kumho 857s, from Tire rack today. i mention this cuz i've learned after much research that these are rated at 500ish lbs more load capacity each than Kendas or Marathons in equiv size (205/75R14), and for similar/less $.

SOAPBOX MODE: the fact that so many of these boats are rotting in fields is a comment on the sad state of the American buying public....if they were rational, they would see the value of a never-deteriorating hull that only requires small frugal motor to push....but NOOOOOOO, they all want Sleek and Faux-Euro and More Power and Phallic Surrogates. ok rant over.:D

Its a double edge sword........ If everyone felt the way we do we'd have a harder time finding these works of art, let them have their glass, we will keep our tin. :D

good point.

this one was further proof that i married the Right Woman....this is the 3d boat i've brought home in last 2 weeks and she didn't throw a fit. :D

i did prime her a bit by showing her some of the gas grills Lowes had for 1800-ish ;)

i keep having visions of taking this one across to Baja if i can figure out how to strap the 8' zodiac on top of cabin or on bow

Well..then all ya need to do is get a cool big old teak swimstep to lash the zodiac to!!! Problem solved and would look GREAT! ya I aint spending my money obviously!!

Re: hullo to all, and hot dawg i got me one!

Kev, that's actually a great idea cept that i'll be having to land fish at the stern (I HOPE....:p.) and i've seen used teak swim steps on fleebay for reasonable $, or you could rip down some teak into strips on table saw and make one. i think Zodiac will actually lash on top of my cabin.

on my motor issues, a possible donor has come up on local CL, some fiberglass atrocity with a 1970-vintage 120hp Mercruiser i could probably get for $400ish. should this be compatible with my 1964 version of same drivetrain? i can swap over entire drivetrain if there are issues between motor and outdrives being compatible with each other, but should this be usable for my hull? i can post this over in the I/O forum if that would be better place. thanks for any insight/wisdom!

I think you could use "A" motor with "B" OD..However I think the easiest way to check is to yank the donor OD and measure the input shaft..Should be the same..I think the length changed in late 70's or early 80's..
Or if you cant yank the OD since you dont own it..Get the Serial #'s from both engines and drives and I bet they are in the same range.

Your OD is a "MR" which pre dates the Alpha series, like mine.
Ratio should be 1.98, same as the donor OD would be.
