Wow, I am torn between really liking that guy's style, and being a known work-web-surfer. However I am a "web developer" so I always have to be on the "web" ;)

I kinda agree with Ez...
I try to cruise iboats, craigslist whatever during "lunch" and those alleged 15 minute breaks..
HOWEVER..
Those sites are also bookmarked on my web enabled phone..ya know when I am out on the road or sitting in an airport..lol

OK Barato, take that letter as a challenge.
Option 1: Web enable your cell like CheapBoatKev.
Option 2: If you're near a window at work bring your personal laptop and get one of these.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002BFMZR8/ref=oss_product

I can vouch that it works pretty good. Hook that bad boy up and see who's out there. Probably a Starbucks or some free wi-fi if your work is in town.

Option 3. Take the boss fishing and ask if he'll ignore your web use. No?? Oops....MOB! Course then you might get a worse boss. Scratch this one.

Option 4: (my personal favorite) RETIRE! Stay home and work on that boat and have the computer close. Priorities man.

Re: hullo to all, and hot dawg i got me one!

All good suggestions, thanx. We do have a coffeepit across street and some of our folks can get their wifi from their ofc. Guess I?ll order one of those antennas and see if I can get it from my ofc (our bldg covers an entire city block).

working on the #4 plan...earliest I can retire is just over 4 yrs, by which time I?ll have house paid off. [and with luck, maybe even have the engine swap on the Starcraft done by then.....]. Just gonna have to figure out something to do to make some $ for trolling gas and replacements for lost lures....

Barato you could work from home part-time by starting your own version of "legalzoom.com" and undercut their prices. (I want 10% or is it 20% now?)

I read in one of your posts that you had eight boats. Do you still own all eight now? If so what makes and models? I saw the one blue fiberglassic and it looked great. Pics on the rest maybe.

Don, one is a cheap sevylor inflatable....all i had at the beginning of 2008. then we added a bigger, reinf'd fabric inflatable. then the portabote. then the MacGregor 25 sailboat, AKA the mobile Mexico retirement condo. then the blue thing....$500 tinboat*. then a Zodiac 8' for a dink for the Mac. then a sport cat, unknown make, of about 18' (free and complete, i couldn't say no). then, finally, the crown jewel, the tin princess, the aluminum girlfriend.

BEWARE, MY SON, FOR THAT WAY MADNESS LIES.......

*with trlr and 40hp Juan-son, buried in neighbor's weeds for years; early 60s ski boat vaguely akin to Holiday, i gutted it and am rebuilding it for the go-anywhere trailerable fishing boat: i'm adding a stitch-n-glue upper to it to add some bow flare and raise gunwale height 6-8" for safety. it has a completely flat hull at stern so it will still pound in any chop but should be real cheap to run...if i like hull results, will repower with 4 stroke. check out the pics in my gallery.

Re: hullo to all, and hot dawg i got me one!

well, we finally got re-started on the SC project. after a carb rebuild and tune on the $650 donor drivetrain, we ran it through a couple of heat cycles and rechecked compression and oil press. surprise....150-160 psi (raw #, not corrected to sea level from our 4000' elev. so actual # would be even higher) on all jugs, and good oil press. so this motor is ready to go into the SC as is....just saved $1000 and a month compared to what i was expecting. :):):):):)

i'd almost bought a nice C-dory 16 for 2200....a hell of a buy but no one here knows what one is.... since i was getting discouraged with Too Many Damn Projects in Every Area of My Life, and since my friend had finally paid me the $2K he owed me for the jeep i sold him in 2006.

how great it is to hear my wife say how much she likes the SC and looks forward to going out on it....great motivator! glad i refrained and decided to plow the 2 Gs into the SC instead. so i'm thinking hard about just getting a new SEI outdrive for the SC to remove uncertainties there.

got motor ready to pull, and trying to get patient ready to receive transplant. actually may try mounting one of those Harbor Fright pickup truck cranes on my friend's F250 instead of building/borrowing an A-frame.

hadn't thought previously how much fun it might be interfacing 1993 vintage new-drivetrain engine wiring harness with old harness in 1964 hull....removing stuff like ballast resistor and firewall-mounted voltage reg since new motor has internal-reg alternator and electronic ign. doesn't help that some prev owner has done wiring work and didn't much worry about what color wire he was using....at some points, brown is the hot lead and on other circuits, he used brown for the ground. guess i'll be picking up a squawk box continuity tester on way home today....

C-dory is a sweet boat. I went through a C-Dory phase, and a grady White phase, and a Mako phase. I'm totally satisfied with the Starcraft now.

Glad the donor motor is ready to drop in, that's sweet:)

What motor is it exactly?

Its a double edge sword........ If everyone felt the way we do we'd have a harder time finding these works of art, let them have their glass, we will keep our tin. :D
What you don't like no class glass boats??????

Welcome back B Man!

C Dory huh? My buddy in Cali had one..His brother had a Farralon (killer fishing boat!) Both were great, but that C Dory was special, old, heavy, and ran a Volvo DP!

Re: hullo to all, and hot dawg i got me one!

yah, i war sorely tempted by the C-dory...great big water hull for only being 16', and affordable to run with a 40 hp 'rude. i saw a similar, but newer and more kitted out, one on Seattle CL for $10K. but given where i fish, i was a bit worried about being slow cooked by sun in that that big pilothouse.... and then there would be Splainin to the Spouse part...... which might involve being slow cooked by the sun after she staked me out across an anthill in the desert

HA, new motor is just a Mercruiser 140 with Alpha 1 drive, but it's the more modern 3.0LX, which has factory electronic ign albeit still a carb. and it's 17 years old instead of 46. compression is actually TOO high, indicating some carbon buildup, but a can of BG44 should do wonders for that.

L&L, we do too like glass boats....we just call them "dearly beloved engine donors" or "the deceased, rest its choppergunned soul"

thanks, Kev. sorry i was MIA for a bit....working on rebuilding BOTH my kickers and getting my motorcycles ready (it's also becoming bike weather down here, and i'm going nuts commuting in the Taco) after rebuilding one and converting the other for street use.

Re: hullo to all, and hot dawg i got me one!

A new approach to engine hoisting:

after much dithering on how to build the A-frame to pull donor-boat motor and get it over the 5' high transom of the Starchief (weld up from steel, carriage bolt some 2x8s together, ???), a friend asked me "what about tall stepladders?" hmmmmm......

i got two 10' stepladders (rated for 300 lbs each) at the Evil Bigbox yesterday, along with two 2x12x12' planks and some chain/shackles. set ladders up about 10' apart and laid the 2x12s across the tops and slung hoist beneath beam. got home from store at 930, motor out of donor by 1130 and into Starcraft by about 1. i could not have built the gantry in this amount of time, let alone done the job. this may not seem like much progress to many of y'all but it had been a major gumption trap for me.

when i say "into" the SC, i mean only that....still have to refurb the gimbal drive before i can mount it....but i can use my regular engine crane for that part.

FWIW, motor barely cleared transom even hoisted all the way up with my come-along....if you try this plan with a Chieftain/big Islander, may want to go with 12' ladders.

now the dilemma....gonnna for sure keep one ladder since my wife needs one, but do i return the other since it;'s only been stepped on maybe 3 times, still has all cardboard tags etc attached, and is perfectly resalable...? it would bring my cost for job down to $225

sorry no pix of this party...need to get a camera battery. PLEEASE don't send the Mob.

I'd return the one ladder and I'd still sleep at night. Retail renting at it's finest.

Dude, no way! He rigged all that up with no photos! Man that was prolly like the work of a major league magician and we missed it!

Ok, ok. I yield to Kev's better judgement. Club back in the closet.

Re: hullo to all, and hot dawg i got me one!

actually the inablity to get pix of the arrangement was one thing slowing me down on whether to return the 2d ladder! i'll get a battery on the way home as i can still hear the drums from the surrounding hilltops....

seriously, this is slowing me down a lot....didn't realize how dependent i'd become on digipix of assemblies as a guide for reassembly until i didn't have the camera :(

Re: hullo to all, and hot dawg i got me one!

I might just use a couple ladders for my hillbilly gantry now that ya mention it.

Thanks for the tip. And get the photos up(if there are any, might need a FOIA request eh?) so I know what I'm doing over here.:D
