Here I have a real Newbee question Im about to ask

I just bought another boat today, This one although almost Identical to my 21.5' cruiser has an Mercruiser 260 I/O, the engine runs water/antifreeze through a heat exchanger that the other side runs what was previously fresh river water, soon to be ocean salt water. In the past I have only had outboards that ran salt water through them.

Is this typical for a I/O to have a Heat exchanger and a secondary pump for the sea/river water, or do I need to do some mods to go from fresh to salt water?

Re: Hx on Mercruiser

Heat exchangers are quite common on IO's, especially salt water boats. Does this Mercruiser have a year? They aren't all the same you know.

and what does Hx mean on Hx on Mercruiser ???????

Hi Don,
Thanks for replying its an 1984, the boat is solid, the outdrive is bad. This was used on the Hudson river for the most part, I know nothing about I/O boats, I initially picked it up to use it for parts I have the same in an outboard version , BUT it is to nice of a boat, it would be a Sin to do that to it. I figure I will fix it up and be a 2 boat family.

Any input would be great

Visit the Adults Only sticky at the to of this forum. You will be glad you did.
Just remember, having an 84 boat, doesn't mean you have an 84 engine and drive, so you might want to go searching for the Merc serial numbers to be sure what you have.

My first thought was why he wanted to put a "Hex" on Mercruiser.

Re: Hx on Mercruiser

abbreviations are jargon specific, are they not

Hx to my field means 'History'

Hx ETOH = history of alcoholism

Hx SA = history of sexual abuse

So I translated the post as History on Mercruiser

Great contribution to this thread, hugh!
