If this is a first application you should apply a barrier coat also. I have used Interlux Micron CSC and now use Vivid Hydrocoat. Both do as advertised but i think the Vivid is less prone to coming off due to scuffing against objets in the water. My boat set's in the water 6months a year.(fresh)

Its been painted before with some kind of ablative paint, its worn away I dont know what. I just bought the boat in the fall. I was thinking I could just sand the bottom to rough it up and paint over it. What the differance between hydracoat and vivid besides the vivid has bright colors. My boat will be in the water 6 months too in fresh water Lake St. Clair in Mi.

No difference. The ablative bottom paint is meant to ware away.It helps to keep fouling off and bottom cleaner.
Well #1 i got the Vivid on line cheaper then Interlux. They are both good. i just think the Vivid holds up better. If you already have antifouling on, just sand it with #80 grit to get the shine of and loose areas ( Flakeing). Mine is black. Make sure you were a respirator. It is dusty when you sand.

Since you are boating in fresh water, it likely makes no difference what AF paint you choose. Go ablative, but why not the cheapest one?

Since I boat in salt water, and use disposable brushes and rollers when I apply AF paint, I have no real interest in water-based AF paint. I use the ablative AF paint with the most copper, for the $$.

I thought the copper content was pretty much the same across the board because it is not allowed anymore due to EPA reg's.

Re: Hydracoat bottom paint

After checking the West Marine Catalog, It appears that antifouling paint still have variable amounts of Copper Oxide, depending on brand and type. Trinidad has 70%; Hydrocoat and PCA have 40%; Micron has 39%' CPP has 38% and Bottom shield has 28%. Most have some antislime ingrediant
