Re: I am at a loss for words

It might sound snotty, and that's how I first read it, but it was probably meant as a joke. I love the "kids left unattended will be given coffee and a puppy." That's great! My BIL has signs posted at his office that say "xxxxx Only Parking: Violaters will be parted out and sold on the internet" That always made me chuckle, too.

As a fun prank, though, I think the sign taped to their sign would get alot of laughs. And, actually, probably from them, too.

Re: I am at a loss for words

I'm still waiting for someone to claim that boats have actually been cast adrift...I bet it has not happened but people probably have cut back on trespassing on the private dock.

Some folks think that because beaches are public that docks are as well. If someone buys a dock and installs it they call the shots on who uses it end of story.

That being said, being good boating citizens means that in a hurricance/storm a dock can be used as a safe haven by stangers by and lrge but not simply because of convenience/lack of proper planning.

Check the weather and be responsible for your vessel.

I doubt any boat has ever been set adrift. The marina would be liable.

Re: I am at a loss for words

the fact is this. a private dock has been paid for by somebody. if i dock at a private dock, whether the water is public or not, whether it's an emergency or not, it's only right to pay SOMETHING for that use. after all, the owners did.

a private dock with a sign like this... who cares what sign you put up? it's your property! snooty? maybe that's how this private club maintains business, by seeming better than the rest. simple capitalism. anyway, maybe they are better than you... after all... they have a private dock. right?

i mean. it's nice to be nice, but it's not required.

setting the boat adrift? if it happens to you... complain, but also.... take your hit legally for trespassing. if you run into the adrift boat.... here's some advice... don't just sue the dock, sue the owners of the boat, and the makers of the boat, the makers of the rope that tied it to the dock, the government entities (all of them) that have anything to do with that body of water.... . you don't want to have your day in court, and find out that somebody else was partially liable....

Re: I am at a loss for words

My first thought wa that it looks like a club for snobs and wondered how the owners would react to someone anchoring their boat a few feet off it & fishing?

On the other hand, I'm guessing that they've probably have had problems in the past because of their location. i.e. a park, bar, restaurant, or some other attraction near their club that boaters would want to stop and visit; and they don't know how to handle it.

If that was my dock I wouldn't cut their boat loose I'd tow it out to the middle of the lake and anchor it for them so when they came back they could see it. If they needed a ride out to get it that would cost them about $300. :D:p

Logical
And good thinking :D

I've been to that lake and it's gorgeous. Problem is it's mostly city folk that are only there on vacation or weekend getaway. they can rent boats and pwc if they want and don't even have to know how to operate them in a safe manner much less a curtious manner.
I'm from the country and we have our share of discurtious folks also. It just seems to me that the city folk are so caught up in that lifestyle that they think everything pertains when they leave.
As for the sign I'm sure the marina doesn't set boats adrift. Mostly 'cause city folk can read. Ha HA ha

I'm not sure what side of this discussion I am on???

Being a boater and seeing that sign sort of pisses me off. I know, I know it's probably there just to make a point and not really intended to be followed. But still, it upsets the casual boater who means no harm but understands that they might have to for some unknown reason tie up to that dock.

Being an former owner of ocean front property with a dock and having morons think they can use my dock and sun bathe on my property or **** in my bushes because, well, they are stupid morons, and I guess I appreciate the sign and I hope he means business.

So I guess I could be labeled schizo or something.

And yes, morons regularly tie up and have lunch or **** in the bushes or dive for lobster or whatever they feel like doing. And, I've heard all kinds of excuses. And, what harm are they really doing, none I guess, it is just the principle. It's mine for me to use and not some moronic freeloader.

Okay, now I feel better...:p

This is clearly divided between the haves and have not?s. If you have your own dock you don?t want unauthorized use. If you don?t own a dock then you think you have the right to use other people?s docks. If you dock at my private dock for your convenience then it will be impounded. Just as if you park your car in my garage I will have it impounded. Of Corse if it?s a matter of safety that?s a different story.

Bottom line DON'T USE MY DOCK WITHOUT MY PERMISSION.!

I know that in Florida, the water belongs to the state. As long as the boat is on the water and not on the dock, there is little you can do. (unless you happen to own the bay bottom, which is rare).

In Florida bodies of water can be owned individually, locally, by the county, state, and US. I live by a private lake and if my neighbors report ya, you'll get cited for trespassing... seen it happen.

Re: I am at a loss for words

General docking at a private dock is just plain wrong. Emergency docking due to breakdown or weather is another matter. Most likely the dock owners got fed up with just anyone thinking it was a public dock. Reason has to come into play in these situations. We have occasional uninvited visitors at the cottage dock. Most times they are having motor troubles and need somewhere to check things out. I have helped them out when necessary and towed them back to the ramp they are at sometimes. If further away we have given them a ride to where they put in to bring the trailer to a closer ramp.
That sign would sure make you think twice about docking there.

Re: I am at a loss for words

it does bring up an interesting question, can you have a tesspassing boat towed away? Who would you call?

I have to pay for parking my vehicle and while it doesn't cost a lot of money (about $100/mo) I expect that my space will be there for me when I need it.

It is clearly labeled and states unequivocally that it is reserved yet people still park in it.

I usually call a tow truck but I don't know what I'd do if I were on a dock.

Re: I am at a loss for words

When I had my own dock at the lake cabin people would tie up but I don't remember why and it didn't happen often. I think we got the angriest when someone would tie up and not come tell us or ask. Most of the time it was and unscheduled issue or problem or needing help. No problem there and we would help if we could or let them use the phone (before cell phones). The ones who would tie off and not let us know, well there we got upset because be it a dock, driveway, yard or anything else it is showing disrespect and no concern not to inform the owner why your there if nothing else to put them at ease and know what is going on. So really unfornately this all comes down to me showing respect to the owners no respect from you no respect from me. I have tied off at docks like this before and talked to the owner and they thanked me and helped or let me do what I needed to do. (Call to have some fuel delivered because I wasn't paying attention oops) But respect goes a long way both ways. A sign like that tells that they hove not been shown any respect. IMHO

Re: I am at a loss for words

There are fairly complicated laws about having vehicles towed off your property in most jurisdictions, even more so if you want to treat it as abandoned. I doubt many places have laws about towing boats unless they happen to lump them together; the regulations about abandoned boats are also complicated. It's even comlpicated for a marina to lien or sell a boat for unpaid fees.
I would be reluctant even to move the boat in this day and time, for the same reason we said it would be stupid to untie it. If you retied it and it sank (caught under the pier on a rising tide for example) the owner might still try to hold you responsible, even though legally you shouldn't be, unless perhaps you were "grossly negligent." But the idea is to avoid a lawsuit, not to win one.

Re: I am at a loss for words

Yeah you are right. But that sign has "I am better than you are" written all over it, That sets the wrong tune from the get go.

I observe this thread has " some people make me feel inferior" written all over it.

We don't get to call other peoples tune for them.

Some may think they are better than me, some think they aren't as good, both are wrong.

Freedom allows for everyone the right to be wrong.

I'm just like the rest of em, God doesn't have any grandchildren.

Anything that speaks of seperation is of man.

If I owned a dock I'd ring it with barbed wire and hang a WELCOME sign.:D
