Re: I am at a loss for words

Had someone else's boat at my dock when i came back from vacation. i chained and locked it to the dock. they obviously called security, and they were banned from using the lake for a month. :) much better then setting it adrift ;)

Not to throw a monkey in the wrench:D

but there are circumstances where it has to be done.

We were out on the lake one day and a storm came in FAST. lighting, thunder driving rain and howling wind. we were heading south but we had another 7 miles before we reached our dock we were not going to make it. We had four kids under 7 years old in a 21 foot bowrider (no top). I turned into an inlet, powered through the no wake zone and into the first empty dock I found. Was I jerk for breaking the rules? Thats a matter of opinion. People's safety come before property ownership.

If I had a breakdown or an emergency I don't care what sign they have up.

And what is the owner of said dock was also rushing to get out of said storm only to find your boat blocking his way putting his family at risk?

Obviously you are giving an extreme example that doesn't really apply to the discussion. You could have been a jerk for putting other people at risk, but if the conditions were that bad and you rushed into my dock, I would invite you in to sit out the storm. If it was a bright sunny day I would kindly tell you to get the hell out.

That said, I think the sign clearly is a joke. Though I think its distasteful and stupid for the owner to put it up because it can and will illicit reactions such as in this thread. There are certainly more clever and funny ways to put it.

setting the boat adrift? if it happens to you... complain, but also.... take your hit legally for trespassing. if you run into the adrift boat.... here's some advice... don't just sue the dock, sue the owners of the boat, and the makers of the boat, the makers of the rope that tied it to the dock, the government entities (all of them) that have anything to do with that body of water.... . you don't want to have your day in court, and find out that somebody else was partially liable....

This portion of this post made me throw up. What a discusting world when we feel we can get our own way and sue any and all who we choose. There should be laws against people who think in this mind set, it is whats wrong with America today. "I dont get my way, I sue you and the ground you walk on". Give me a break and remove yourself from sharing silly thoughts that provide no good result other than proving just how some minds consider solutions. You by chance chase Ambulances too?
Man I hope you were kidding about you solution.

NO TRESPASSING VIOLATORS WILL BE EATEN ALIVE.
This sign is posted locally where the guy has his own private zoo, he keeps lions and bears and rumored to have a panther back in there too, he's been in trouble with the authorities on licensing and also has had trouble with juvenile delinquints and vandalism, the guy is pumped! I've seen the guy has an add in the paper for deer carcases(spell) disposal, now that deer season is in.

greenbush, I took that one as the poster being sarcastic ABOUT the kind of people who sue everyone vaguely connected with an incident, rather than taking personal responsibility. He and you think alike. relax.

I agree that someone with their own private dock has the right to keep people off it but setting them adrift is certainly not the right thing to do...as mentioned if a car was left in your driveway you couldn't put it in neutral and let it roll into traffic

Nice dock and looks as if they have put some cash into it. But all in all it is thiers and they must have paid for it so just ignore it and go on about your way until you can afford one like it. BUT! the choice of warning is just asking for a nice fire on the lake in the evening maybe just the standard violators will be prosecuted or boat chained and locked like afore mentioned with a note to the location of the key owners home or local authorities. Respect other peoples property is all it takes someone must not have respected these individuals in the past is all I can think?

Re: I am at a loss for words

I have been in a situation where I had to tie to a private dock. Was one of those rare 15% thunderstorm days and it came up out of the blue, we ducked up a creek and tied to a dock. I went straight up to the house to see is anyone was home and explain the situation and to ask permission had they been there. That said, we also did nto leave the boat unattended.

Also, while boating one day and passing by a row of private docks on the river, I noticed a boat that was tied up in such a way that the stern was against the dock and the bow pointing straight out into the river. Then I noticed there was a line form the bow and something was tied to the end and floating. It was a board that had broke free of the dock and it was the one with the cleat bolted to it. SO, I tied to the dock, pulled the boat around and resecured it to the dock to prevent the homeowners from loosing their boat.

I tied to a Dock (private property) to rescue private property. Yes, it was a good deed and I am glad I did it.

Now, do I agree with using someone elses private dock for fishing or sunbathing without permission, no. Even when I dock at a marina due to myself or my family needing to use the restroom facilities, I find a dock attendant and let them know why I am there and where I am dock and find out if I am in the way or need to move so as to not interfere with their business or operations...

Asking permission and stating your intentions (common courtesy) goes a long way to avoiding a terrible situation...

If that was my dock I wouldn't cut their boat loose I'd tow it out to the middle of the lake and anchor it for them so when they came back they could see it. If they needed a ride out to get it that would cost them about $300. :D:p Or I'd use a chain and padlock and lock the boat to the dock then charge them to unlock it.

thats what my marina does- chain it.
