I am lost ! I have a 1996 GS 205, with electrical an problem.

The exhaust bellows gasket failed, allowing water to get into the cylinders. That tore up the flywheel. After putting a new flywheel on it, the boat started and ran for 5 min. I shut it off, put the interior back in it, & took it to the lake. It wouldn't start. The battery was dead. I put a new battery in it, it still wouldn't start. New plugs, wires still no go. I put a new coil on it, & it started, in my yard, but when I get to the lake, NO GO ! The new battery is dead . I charged the batt. & it will do nothing. There must be something wrong, with the wiring, that is on the motor, but I can't figure it out. OR could it be the ignition switch ? Does anyone have "Pictures" of where the the wires go, on the motor ? Any suggestions are welcome. What could be killing the battery, & the coil ?

sounds like you have a battery drain. If its happening over a short period of time see if the alternator fell warm as they can fail and cause a battery drain. If the alternator is cold then you may need a volt meter to find whats causing the drain. Also check the coil if that is warm to the touch then the coil is getting power when the engine is not running and that will cause a battery drain and may burn the coil out.

p.s also check that you have not nipped a wire when you changed the flywheel

Most people with 96-foot boats usually hire someone to fix problems. I can't recall anyone with a yacht like that asking for advice in a forum like this.

If water flooded the engine compartment, I would go with Glenn's idea. Also check the starter and solenoid.

I think he simply misplaced the punctuation and means he has a '96 (1996) boat, not a 96' (96-foot) boat.:facepalm:

You might be correct. I think he knows how to use apostrophes and he has a 96-foot boat.

How do you figure he has a Glastron? I don't think they ever made anything close to a 96-footer.

You guys having a good time with this ? Of course its a 1996 GS 205, and not a 96 footer. 205 signifying a twenty and one half foot long boat. Sorry to have confused you, jhebert . I fixed the problem. It was a loose wire on the alternator, causing a circuit breaker to trip. I really don't see someone pulling a 96' boat, to and from, the lake. LOL

Nor do I. But you said, "I took the boat to the lake." This is easily done in a 96-foot boat. You just take the boat up some inlet and into the lake.

Did that loose connection on the alternator cause any damage to the rectifier diodes in the alternator? Usually if you look at the rectifier diodes in an alternator with a cross expression they will blow up. A loose connection is also a good way to cause an early end to their service life.

I fixed the problem. It was a loose wire on the alternator, causing a circuit breaker to trip. I really don't see someone pulling a 96' boat, to and from, the lake. LOL

Good detective work. With the alternator wire shorting to the alternator case (which I assume is what you found), you most likely have no internal damage to the unit. But if you continue to have a proble with the battery discharging, the diodes are the first things to check.
