Re: I am STUMPED! please HELP!

Okay well here is where I am at. I replaced my slow speed needle valve bearing (it was tore up bad). I also picked up a new gas tank that has a vent screw top. She fired up for me and would stay running. It would run roughcand make a skipping noise the whole time it ran. Mind you this is the longest I have ever had it running. I played around with the needle setting. Started 1 1/2 turns out. I didnt have too much luck dialing it in. I was hoping this would take care of the skipping maybe. Also it would only stay running at WOT. Anyways, after I ran it for a while i gave it a break and went in for dinner then ran to the store. Fired right back up for me, again it was running rough. After a while it wouldnt fire up for me. So I pulled the plugs and looked at them and they were black as could be. Now I am kind of curious as to why this would be...when I replaced the head gasket on it a few weeks back I cleaned the piston heads up real nice...I really think this is why its running rough...

Also, I noticed a good amount of black sludge in the tank afterwards...it appeared the be oil? Strange...

Black sludge in the water is normal. However black spark plugs indicates too rich. Might be flooding carb, might be a punctured fuel pump membrane??

Re: I am STUMPED! please HELP!

fuel pump leak ? can be diagnosed by removing it from the transfer port plate then blocking the pulse hole on the plate < I made a "plug" using the pump mounting gasket as a pattern to cut a 1/4" piece of plywood to hold a piece of rubber gasket in place, anything would work though >..then either gravity feed the carb or using a reducer, attach the fuel line from the tank to the carb fuel line and then pump fuel using the primer bulb..you can confirm or eliminate the f/p doing this

Re: I am STUMPED! please HELP!

chief, take a popsicle break and think a minute. You're operating under the assumption that this is the right carb on this engine. Looks like the diagrams no doubt, but so do several hp. carbs from that time. The orfice plug <jet> has a specific diameter size as it acts as a fuel metering device for the carb. It has a size stamped on it...do you recall the number? On an engine this age, it's highly doubtful you're the first one into this carb and it's tempting to clean that jet by poking something through it. If the "cleaning rod" was larger and harder than brass, it's not that difficult to increase the jet's diameter. If you used a Sierra kit...it's been noted here that some had needle seat gaskets that were too thick so the float level adjustment would have to compensate for this. Poor quality spark and retarded timing can produce black plugs as well as too much fuel. Have you noticed fuel dripping from the carb throat?

Yes, I do have fuel leaking from the throat of the carb, and yes I did use a sierra rebuild kit! I am going to swap the needle seat gasket back to the old one. I did not notice fuel from the throat before I rebuilt the carb

A too thick gasket will normally result in a too low float level unless compensated (adjusted).
When having the carb down, attach the fuel line from tank straight to the carb top, hold it up-side down and apply pressure. Watch if any fuel is seeping by in the valve.

I will be checking that out Haffiman...I have noticed like I said earlier, there is fuel coming out of the carb throat...

Re: I am STUMPED! please HELP!

Well i was tinkering with it here just a minute ago...I found that I can keep the motor running...The catch is its got to be wide open throttle and when the motor is about to die I pull out the choke and itll stay running...and when its about to die I push the choke in and itll keep running. The motor will run for about 5 seconds and want to die, so then I pull choke out itll run for another five seconds. If I keep repeating that ever 5 seconds or so itll stay runnin:facepalm:

Re: I am STUMPED! please HELP!

in the carb rebuild did you remove and clean the main jet < orfice plug >? did you clean the nozzle tube well? passage way to the idle circuits? float set parallel to, or the free end a little higher than, parallel to the carb bowl casting?..in" tinkering with" what did you adjust, move, or reset?

I did not remove the orfice plug. I did however run some very thin and light gauge wire through it and blew it out with compressed air. Float is set parallel to float chamber. Carb is clean.

Is the nozzle gasket (#40) in there?

Was the welch plug #5 removed and the idle passages cleaned?

Re: I am STUMPED! please HELP!

I used a punch awl to CAREFULLY poke a hole in mine and pry/lift it out... (the welch plugs are aluminum so its not too hard to do)

Use a socket the same size as the welch plug (turn it open side upwards) and use a rubber mallet / small hammer to re-install the plug. Some say you can "seal" them with clear fingernail polish if you are worried about an air leak around the welch plug.

Did you do a link and synch on this? Your service manual will tell you how, if you have one. If the carb and timing are out of synch it will run poorly.

Hope my suggestions help. Glad to see you haven't given up on this.

Thanks for the ''how to'' on the removing of the welch plug...I cant say I am familiar with the link and synch???

Re: I am STUMPED! please HELP!

align the carb roller with the mark on the timing cam so that the throttle plate is just beginning to open.
Shift into forward gear and advance the throttle handle to wot ; the roller should now reach the highest point on the timing cam and the throttle plate should be horizontal in the carb throat.

Re: I am STUMPED! please HELP!

Well here's where I am at right now...I got the motor running. The only way itll stay running in neutral is if its WOT. And even then it wants to die off after about 15 seconds. As soon as I kick it into forward in the trash can and inscrease the rpms a whisker she purrs like a kitten. Very impressed...So I took it out on the lake today for the first time ever. She SCREAMS on my 14 ft sea nymph. I had a big old smile on my face for the first time in a while. I still know its not perfect yet, but its encouraging my and keeping me motivated to keep on goin with it. My question is, is there an adjustment I can make to increase the max RPM's when its in neutral. I mean I have to shift it into forward after about 10 seconds so she doesnt die...

Also, after I can it for about 20 mins out on the lake, I brought it home and pulled the plugs. They look brand new like they did when they came out of the box...I know this isnt right and it'll burn her up quick. Do I just adjust my needle to the lean side more until I find that the plugs have a nice brown/tanish color to them?

I want to thank everybody on this site that has helped me along the way. There is a very large number of very knowledgable people on here. Thank you much, and sorry about the dumb questions. I just want to learn there smaller two stroke outboards, and it interests me ver much

Re: I am STUMPED! please HELP!

You mentioned at one point that the motor would run rough and "skip." That, combined with the business about it running better when choked, makes me wonder if you are running lean, not rich. I know that doesn't match with fouled plugs, but I still wonder if it is the case. Was the skipping that you noticed a "sneezing" sound - what some people call a "lean sneeze?"
