I like your style[insert applause sounds here]

I am originally from Georgia and as anybody from the south knows the first solid food we had as babies was grits. So people that decide on a whim tries them at some so-called restaurant that could care less what they taste like and are immediately telling everybody what crap they are.

As for ordering grits most places below the Mason/Dixon line serve them automatically with eggs.

I personally think food in the south is the best that the US has to offer. I had one friend who moved out here from California and said he had never heard of sweet tea until he moved out here. Is this true? No sweet tea anywhere but the south? If so, I'm sorry.

Know what you call a Yankee in North Carolina?

A half-back. They're halfway back from the trip they took to Florida.

My town (here in Florida) is full of Yanks. They come down here, like it, move in, and then petition the local government to make changes to make it more like where they were from. Um I'm sorry, but if you don't like it...take you're rear back to where you came from.

Honestly I try to like most everyone....but I find myself looking around in the local restraunts and bars and then thinking to myself..."I don't reconize anyone in here as being a local".....then thinking how nice it would be to run them out of the establishment so the aren't "in my way". I guess I'm getting crotchety as I'm getting older.

Sure there is sweetened tea in other places - it just isn't called "sweet tea."

OK I live north of the 50th parallel in another country. What in the heck is "grits" and what do they taste like. I have herd of the term but have never tasted or seen them.

The only thing i know about southern food is its spicy and my bland taste buds would not be able to handle it. :D I will crawl back into my igloo now :p

Dang, who cares if someone is cracking some "southerner" jokes????
You should have cracked a few Yankee jokes and got in on the fun!

Now, I am from Louisiana and I HATE grits! I can't really explain what they are but they are "gritty". Kind of like little tiny pieces of chopped up rice. --no, I just can't describe them. But, they're nasty. I can only eat them after a 3 hour coon hunt when I'm starving and then only after heaping butter and sugar on 'em. My dad loves 'em, but then again, he likes peanut butter-n-mayonaisse sandwiches.

Southern food (with the exception of grits) is by far the best food. I, too, noticed that Yankees don't drink their tea with sugar in it. They also don't like white gravy on their hashbrowns. Their food seems terribly bland to me, and I don't like super-spicy food or care for tobasco sauce. (blasphemy, I know!)
Don't tell me, you Yankees don't know what tobasco sauce is, either.

BTW, when I worked out in the Gulf of Mexico during college, those cajuns claimed anything North of Interstate 10 was really a Yankee. I was offended.
We North Louisiana rednecks have a name for them, as well.:D;)

Grits are mashed corn, with some water added. Throw some grape jelly or butter and salt in with them and they are goooood....

Grits are good with butter. dont know about the grape jelly. No judgement so ill try it before i knock it.
I used to driver long haul truck and there is good food all over this country, canada too. but I have to say the best is "Good Ole Southern BBQ"
I stopped the truck in the middle of the road one time and ran in to a little Mom and Pops place to some. Those places are the best.

I'm a Yankee.

I don't like grits. (Never quite got the appeal of those things, regardless of what's mixed in w/them).

I would hope I wouldn't say loud, rude things about something so benign as...grits.

I'm originally from Virginia. And, I have never eaten grits. Just the name turns me off to them. I like to talk about the southerners, they're usually the friendliest and nicest people around.

Re: I couldnt keep my mouth shut

Old style grits are made from coarsely ground corn and are now called Yellow Grits.

Today's grits are made from Hominy. The germ of the corn kernel is soaked in liquid and swells to about 4 times it's original size.It is then dehydrated and ground to it's proper size and packaged.

Texas Grits are Fried/Grilled Hominy.

Sorry Fairelane Man but your speak-up thread turned into a Grits thread.

I am an Ohioan, born and raised, but I do eat grits! My wife (an Illinoisan) thinks I am crazy, but I don't care. I have always been an oatmeal/farina/cream of wheat/grits kind of guy!
