I posted here last week, about how I burned the impeller in the water pump by running it in my driveway...well, $400 later to repair the water pump and other small parts, I'm back on the water.
I don't think there's any internal engine damage....at least not yet, it still gets up to speed well, and no milky oil.
BUT,
I'm taking on water.

I found leaks coming from the sea water lines coming up from the water pump in the engine bay, it has 2 rubber sections...I assume for vibration absorption. Those two rubber section are both leaking water, so I have to exercise my bilge pump every so often.

Can anyone hlep me identify those w rubber fitting I need to replace ? part numbers ? It's a 1988, 3.0 GM Mercruiser.

THANKS

You can not have leaks in the system. And we can't see what is leaking.
Take some pictures and post them here so we can see what is leaking. Then you can get some help.

Re: I didn't smoke my Chaparral !

I'm not trying to be difficult, I should have been clearer. I'm not looking for someone to identify the parts, I'm looking for a source/link/pdf for the Parts Manual....where I can lookup and identify the parts.

I work for a Cummins distributor, (CumminsMercruiser), so I have access to Mercruiser parts through my Parts Dept, I just need OEM part #'s.

I'd rather try to do this myself, instead of calling the Dealer it was just at (which I may, cause I'm dissapointed they didn't notice the water leak). It's not much, after 15 minutes of running, there's a couple inches in the bilge.

This sound a bit strange.... Sound more like exhaust parts...

"water lines coming up from the water pump in the engine bay"
Is just one piece approx 1/2 inch rubber house

Check serial number!

That sounds like a lot to me. Just be careful, I wouldn't want you to pop a line and get those couple of inches in 15 seconds.

You are correct, it is the exaust. thanks for the link, I didn't now if it was water coming...or going.

Taking the engine cover off, to my right, and at the back of the engine is a water line, about 4" diameter. This is a what's leaking.

Yea you cooked that when you ran it for ten minuted with no water cooling the exhaust, that was the smoke that was pouring from your engine compartment, when you SMOKED YOUR CHAP.

Good luck, glad you got it figured

You are gonna need a 9/16 and some gaskets for the elbows too.

You would be better off taking them to a dealer to compare them. There are a few different connectors.

Re: I didn't smoke my Chaparral !

I only ordered #1 and #5.

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/M...856558/EXHAUST SYSTEM (NEW DESIGN)/parts.html

I don't see any gaskets in the parts breakdown, just the hose sections, and the clamps....which I figured I can resuse.

Another issue.....I was getting water in the floor compartment where I keep life jackets....about 1". The bilge pump ran the engine compartment almost dry, but this water remained until I pulled the plug out in the parking lot. The water in the compartment did have a slight sheen to it, to I'm thinking it was from the engine compartment....but how did it get there, and why didn't it drain with the bilge pump ?

Excellent point....YES, I should be able to get the rubber section off by backing out the hose clamps.

Re: I didn't smoke my Chaparral !

RE Water...check your hull design. when my boat is sitting in the water, unless I am under power, the bilge sits higher than my storage in the front of the boat. When you trailer it, it your sitting more "level" and the extra water will drain. Also, my bilge pump sits up about an inch from the bottom of the bilge...I assume so it doesn't suck up any crud that may lay in the bottom of the boat. Either or both may also explain the "extra" water left behind by your bilge pump.

I just get in the habit of pulling my plug everytime I pull it out of the water while I am hooking up the tie down straps. Will keep you aware if you are taking on any water...and you don't want to have the drain plug in in case you get caught in the rain without, or with a poor cover. No fun having your boat fill up with rain water.....

Good Luck.

Re: I didn't smoke my Chaparral !

You're 100% correct. When the bilge pump stops pissing water out the side, there's still standing water in the bilge. The pickup must be an inch or so off the bottom.

This makes me think this 1" of water not only sits in the bilge, but runs under the entire hull ? that's how it's coming up a tiny hole in this compartment ?

I'm just hoping/praying this water came in from the leaking exhaust lines, and no where else.

Replacing the exhaust hoses is so much more easy if you remove the risers instead of fighting the hoses. Also it gives you a good reason to inspect them for rust....Gaskets are cheap...

The water shutter #6 in the picture will be melted to nothing as well.
It keeps water from backing up into the motor as the waves/currents crash against your prop ? or in the case of a "fast stop".

Thanks for the advice....I'll get the gasket and the shutter, and replace it as you suggest.
