i dont beleive in lake monsters.......but i saw something.

i live in kelowna canada.
kelowna is on the shores of the okanagan lake.......55 miles long 5 miles wide in some areas.......and said to be the fabled home of the ogopogo.

joan and i have seen really weird large wave patterns on the lake. even in the winter......there is a lookout on the south side, that we sit and park and listen to music.
i have noticed these strange formations often. they always seem to be heading toward rattle snake island. and always around early evening.
the waves are large.......it even happens in the winter when there are no boats in sight. very large definite waves leaving white-caps on a flat glass calm lake.

last night.....i finally got the boat on the water after totally re wiring the trailer.........dropped her in the water....fired it up and wahoo......off i went...
the cops were on the water shaking people down for any money they could get (fines) so i set for the south side of the lake to stay away from them.

had it running for about 20 mins......everything was good......then ......i heard a clunk. and she just stopped........the motor died fast.....
tryed to re start.....but she was seized tight......would not turn an inch.

it was a beautiful day....i was only a mile form shore...and there were lots of boats around......so i just relaxed opened a beer and sat.
i decided after a while to start paddeling.......so i went for it.......i was paddling about 20 mins.....then decided to take a dip.......
got naked......and jumped in.......there were no boats around with in at least a mile at that time......(or i would not have been "au natural") got out of the water opened a beer....lit a smoke......sat there for a minit.....then i saw the waves.

the waves were about 30 yards from my bow and they were biig. no boats were in the area at all......and they were starting from a point and spreading out behind the point.....moving forward about 5 mph.......i stood and stared.....and wondered. then i saw something just under the water. LARGE....i realized it had to be about 20 feet minimum...and swam not like a fish....side to side.....but a humpy like swimming.....with sections at the surface...and most under the water.....

dont know what it was......but i saw something....and it was BIG.

it was right in the area that i have seen the strange waves....and early evening.

A couple of beers and what were you smoking?!? Maybe we would all see something if we were partying with you!!

Actually, while coming thru Jax last year, we followed a wave 6" high and stretched for 2 miles across the river. Literally followed it for 2-3 miles. The river was a flat as glass and this wave just kept rolling thru.

Ogopogo, the lake monster.

Even my grandma told me stories from back in 1920 when something came up under the raft and almost capsized it just off the beach in Summerland.


(By the way the lake is 135 km/84 miles long +-)

Lake Champlain is supposed to have a 'monster' too. 'Champy' the locals call it.

But then, I've heard stories of prankster Coast Guard guys supposedly going to the far side of the lake in the evening when it was calm, running a few passes back and forth to build up some good waves, and then returning to the VT side to listen to people speculate where the mysterious waves came from.

Interesting story. Now that you know what to look for, maybe you can get some pics.
BTW, I too have attracted big swimmers after a quick dip in the lake with my shirt off during college, but they were just "big boned" human females looking for fun.....

Better contact that Jeremy dude that does the show "River Monsters." He will get to the bottom of it and catch it, or one of it's offspring, whatever it is.

In fact, didn't they air a show about that creature and speculated that it was baluga whales?

lol.....about holding the flash light under my chin......that show with a guy named josh gates, is all about people running around at night just like that.....

as far as the boat........nope....she didnt start.....had to get towed in.

the lower unit cracked over the winter (dont know why.....i drained it !) so i had it off and had it welded....(but i didnt pressure test it) changed the uppers to a 185 ratio.....and was testing it.
when i got back home....i pulled the lower oil plug.....and tons of water came out.......
im going to pull the drive later today and flash the motor....i might have to replace the drive.....i have uppers....but i might start looking for a lower unit !

nothin i cant fix.

as far as ogopogo.......i will go looking for him when i get back on the water.....this time ill take my camera.
the people here in kelowna, mostly believe in something in the lake....lots of people say its a big sturgeon........but it didnt swim like a fish.....and i would have saw a rear fin. sturgeons are something like sharks in basic body style.

the waves he threw were taller than any wakeboard boat with full ballast.
i used to live in victoria......spent lots of time on the water......i have seen many whale pods swim....this was different...what ever it was didnt breach the water like a whale......but was just under the surface.......every once in a while i could see some kind of body. but then it was gone!

maybe Bob VT can give me some tips on a quick way to immobilize the critter....lol

Here in the slums of lake Erie we have one called South Bass Besse, have seen it's tall whip around stapping a boat like a toy. This thing swims at night, comes ashore to eat the grapes. Anything can live in these waters, much like the fabeled whale named Moby.
