sooooo what if the one inch dial indicator does not work?
If you actually follow some advice and measure the required length, as I posted then you would know.....wouldn't you?
Good luck....I am done

Re: i don't get it

if i didnt throw my cap for the welch plug then im going to take it out 2moro.

im really i mean really hoping that i still have dirty carbs.

btw i tried the carb adjustments agin today. i had both at 1 3/4 out. then doing the top carb i brought it in. but it never gave a clear increase and smooth out in rpms. a little but it wasnt very clear. lets just say that it wasnt like my little johny rude 10hp :D best running motor i have owned so far

Re: i don't get it

http://www.harborfreight.com/6-inch-dial-caliper-66541.html < i have one of these? without the gauge in the middle. could i somehow use that?

Someone else said no, but that's what I use. Here's the pictures.

(edit) you need to be able to read it within a thou or 2. A digital caliper, available online and at places like Harbor freight for 10 - 20 bucks is ideal, and it's handy for a lot of other things also.

hmmm i saw that somewhere.

looks interesting.

how would you find .235 before top dead center though?

i don't have access to welding?

what does the other guy think about this?

btw i need help getting the wlech plug in the carbs out. they're steel.

is drilling and prying with a nail? the right way to go?

Here, and screamandfly.com

how would you find .235 before top dead center though?

You get the gauge installed, push the depth gauge into the hole, rotate the the engine past TDC, hit the zero button, rotate the engine 1/2 revolution, push the depth gauge into the hole past the desired depth, rotate the engine until it reads .235".

i don't have access to welding?

JB weld, epoxy, bubble gum. It ain't rocket science, or high stress, either one.

what does the other guy think about this?

Don't know, don't care.

btw i need help getting the wlech plug in the carbs out. they're steel.

is drilling and prying with a nail? the right way to go?

Drill small hole, screw in a sheet metal screw, pry out.

hope it helps

soooo just got the welch plugs out and they were squeaky clean. absoultely nothing in them. took a wire and stuck it up the hole. nothing:eek: carb cleaner came straight through the

why won't my motor idle!

i still don't understand this procdure? if rotate it up after i rotate it a half revolution wouldnt the reading be a little bit off?

Re: i don't get it

bump

sooo 2moro on my list is to check the fuel pump

bwt when i took the fuel filters in the carb found some kind of gunk on it?? no clue what it could be. paper like i guess maybe cork? gasket but it was something. found on the bottom carb filter.

soo im waiting in the mail for 2 new wlech plugs. man was i really hoping to fiind something in there. it looked brand new squeaky clean.

any more ideas on helping my idle?

im going to get a spark tester from auto zone sooo as soon as i get the carbs back on i can check spark at a low speed.

this is driving me nuts:eek:

Once more ssslllloooowwwwwllllyyy.

I recommend you always turn the engine clockwise, so you don't tangle up the water pump.

Turn it clockwise till the #1 piston is down in the cylinder near the bottom.

Install the depth gauge and slide it into the hole a couple of inches.

Rotate the engine slowly approx 1 turn. It will push the depth gauge back so that when the piston retreats, it leaves the gauge at Top Dead Center.

Hit the Zero button on the gauge. Now you have used TDC as a 0 reference.

Push the gauge back into the hole greater than the measurement you want.

Rotate the engine slowly till the gauge reads what you want.

Set the timing pointer on the mark.

On the idle. You need.
1. good compression.
2. Strong reliable spark
3. Idle mix and timing right
4. No vacuum leaks
5. That includes bleed lines and bleed check valves.
6. Reed valves in good shape.

hope it helps

I know. I survived 9 of them.:D

Maybe that's why I've developed a bit of a crust. It's worth it, though, to witness these moments of epiphany. (a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something, usually initiated by some simple, homely, or commonplace occurrence or experience.)

Re: i don't get it

ill get the one from harbor freight. it's cheaper and it too has the "zero" button

today i checked the fuel pump it was perfect. held it up to the light and nothign came through.

cleaned and adjusted points to .010. they were less than .008 for some odd reason.

broke the ground wire off the magneto sooo ill be rewiring a new one.(it was hanging by a few strands)

carbs are clean!!!!

found some particles in the bowl. i think i might have rust getting in some how from the tank. as soon as i get it running im going to switch out with a good plastic tank that has 89 octane fuel see if it will make a difference(doubt the octane will)
